this, too. http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/698410/Sony-Announces-PlayStation-3-Slim-For-299-Available-In-September.html

not backwards compatible with ps2 games.

Is it just the Slims that aren't backwards compatible?  Or just certain models?  I bought one of the early PS2's when they came out and had some limitations on the expanded features like internet and accessories like remote control plug-ins.

Sony completely dropped backward compatibility about a year ago when they introduced the 40gb model. The first models had the PS2 hardware integrated into the motherboard and then they revised it to emulate the PS2 cpu and kept the graphics chip on the motherboard. Then they just decided to cut it out completely as a cost-cutting measure. So you can't go to the store today and buy a new PS3 with PS2 backward compatibility, even though all PS3's play PS1 games. Go figure.
