I use CCM's and like them.  The best ones are the Graf's but they are friggen expensive. 

I've bought both of my pair of skates and lots of equipment from hockeymonkey.  They have the best prices and the service is top notch.  Be careful with the sizes.  Each manufacturer is different.  I just know that with CCM, I wear a size 9 and my regular shoe size is 10.5.  Your best bet might be to take him to the local skate shop and let him try on a few pair and pick the ones he wants.
