All I can find is that so far, Reid saw T.O. whining about something-AGAIN and walked by him and told him to "shut up."  Taking exception to this "horrible" treatment, Owens responded and a full blown war of words erupted culminating in Owens being asked to leave camp and the team for the whole week.

Historically...yes.  I can't think of once in the era since Free agency started that a team offered up a contract averaging 5 +  a year that didn't keep that player on board for at least two seasons at full pay.  Besides, if he wanted a long term deal with whatever terms, that's the contract he SHOULD have signed instead of the current one if it's so damned bad.  The guys that get cut from large long term deals for underperforming, are almost exclusively(98%) in the third year and beyond.  Even then, they've already cashed in the signing bonus money and made out like bandits.

Look, I get it that these guys risk serious injury and should be paid in a manner commensurate with the risk.  HOWEVER, they usually get a very handsome signing bonus (7 figures in his case) for joining a new team via free agency, they do so by choice, and a contract should mean something.  What these guys don't get, and most fans don't either, is that a 7 year contract usually doesn't mean 7 actual years.  It usually means 2 to 3 guaranteed and years 4-7 are optional.  That's why you see guys getting cut midway through a new long term contract.  If they were smart, and actually cared about job security instead of upfront money, they'd get it in writing that the contract is guaranteed.  Instead what they get is a contract that "sounds" wonderful( and let's them posture that they're the 1st highest or 2nd or whatever at that position) and high paying that averages some ridiculous amount of money over many years but in fact, the truth of the contract, which their agent and they know FULLY well, is that most long term deals-unless otherwise specified, are 3 year contracts with options to be picked up by the team.  This is often described as a team "exercising their option". 

The player has control of the whole process BEFORE they sign the contract, after that, the power does and should reside in the hands of ownership.  If you don't like the terms of a contract, even just little parts, don't sign the F***ing contract!  Be a man and stop acting like a little bitch!

But I don't walk around flaunting the fact that I'm such a magnificent employee who is criminally underpaid either.  And I AM both.  I kick ass as a teacher and get paid a pittance compaired to those in another field with equivalent skills and experience.  Certainly, we'd all like more money, that's not the issue.  If he would just shut the F*** up and go out his business quietly and "professinally", I wouldn't have near the problem with it.  But the bottom line is he DID sign a contract willingly, DID accept a huge ass signing bonus, and is now acting like a petulant child about it.  I wish he'd just take his ball and go the F home.
