I found a copy of Windows 2000 Professional, so tonight, I'm going to attempt to install it onto a Pentium 2 that currently has Windows 95 on it.

The disk says it's for a Dell only, but I'm sure that's just something to keep it from being sold on the black market.

Since my computer is in the shop, I got this old computer from my dad. My cable modem wouldn't work with 95, so I'm going to attempt to install this.

You all can start taking bets on whether I will be able to get online tonight.

If it works, the first thing I'm going to do is start downloading old DOS games like this to play. I've heard that games don't work well on Windows 2000, though.

You heard correctly.  Windows 2000 was built from the NT kernel, and it isn't condusive to DOS-based anything, really.

I keep an image of Windows 95 on Microsoft Virtual PC for such a reason.

Things get even murkier if you decide to install the much better NTFS as the file system, then you can forget running Win95 programs too.

It didn't work, anyway. Stupid computer. The disk kept saying it was licensed only for Dell.

I kind of thought it would do that.  It needed a specific key in the BIOS.

Do you have a CD burner available?  or I could mail you a fix as well.

I don't know if that computer has a burner, my work computer doesn't.

CompUSA still hasn't even sent my iBook off to Apple.

I have a couple of extra computers lying around.  You pick 'em up, they're yours.

Do you realize how tempting that is for me?

I am thinking about buying a new laptop since I don't have to buy a new car...

How about you just overnight me any Windows disks that you have lying around?

When I get home tonight.  Win2k pro or XP?  Or Win95  or I think I have a few other disks around as well, it's been a while since I looked.

I'd take anything that'll work on a Pentium 2. I've never really used Win2K or XP. The last Windows computer I had was Win98.

Unless you have a bunch of RAM I wouldn't try XP.  Win2k will run on a Pentium 2, but it eats RAM, too.  Win2k is probably your best bet.

Win2K it is.  send me an email with your address, and I will see about getting it out tonight.  regular mail should get there pretty quick since I'm only in Philly, 2-3 days?

I'm supposed to go by a friend's later to get his Win98. I'll let you know if that doesn't work.

Thanks for offering.
