I just spent the last hour or so reading The Tell-Tale Heart and The Pit and the Pendulum to Timothy.

Not your standard bedtime fare, I know, but he likes it.  I read The Masque of the Red Death to him a while back, and he's been wanting more for a while now.

It gets to be a bit like a literature lesson when I have to explain the language to him, but it's so worth it when I can see the obvious tension in his body when he exclaims, "OH MAN!  It's gonna cut him in half!!!" or when he figured out that it was not the old man's heart after all, and got all excited.

Those are some great moments as a parent.

Yes, I'm weird.  But hey, my kid digs Poe.  It can't be all bad.

I've heard a reading of The Raven and it is much better spoken than when read.

Oh yeah, The Raven is definitely meant to be read aloud.  The cadence (is that the right word) is kind of amazing.  I love it.

Poe kicks ass!!  Read him Cask of Amantillado next.  Very cool revenge/murder plot.

It's good that you still read with your kid and spend that kind of time together.  I think that's an invaluable experience growing up. He'll always cherish that as he gets older.
