A child can go only so far in life without potty training. It is not mere coincidence that six of the last seven presidents were potty trained, not to mention nearly half of the nation's state legislators.

Thank God.

I love this book.  It doesn't need to be a movie.  Frankly, I don't see why Alan Moore keeps letting people make films of his work!  None of them have worked out.  In fact, they've all been trainwrecks.  V for Vendetta looks -horrid-.

Moriarties diatribe aside, I still think it's a bad idea to make this into a movie.  The original art form was enough.  It doesn't need the eventual "retelling" it will surely get.  It has form and substance and lends itself well to the media in which it was originally presented.

That's a totally legitimate stance.  And I lean towards agreeing with you.

That said, I am adamantly of the opinion that Alan Moore's works, and any other narrative work in any other medium, can be made into a respectible film given the right people working on it without suits calling the creative shots.  You'll never get a completely faithful translation, as the mediums tell their narratives differently, but you can retain the spirit and intent and as much of the story as is necessary.

I purposefully avoided reading V for Vendetta until after I saw the film so I could watch the movie objectively.  Now I'm ready to read the trade and decide which I like more.  I can't do that with Watchmen, but at least the project seems to keep landing in the hands of people who express an interest and doing the project right.

Of course, doing it right would make the suits very uneasy.

But yeah, it probably ought to stay in it's medium.  The reality is that too many compromises will likely have to take place.  Perhaps the decision will ultimately be decided upon V's box office totals.

Without reading any comics, I can say that this argument would be moot if hollywood would accept some new ideas.  It's getting seriously stale down there.  When I went to see V for Vendetta, there were 5 previews- 2 remakes and 3 sequels.  Pathetic.

While I would love to see more original content, Hollywood is first and foremost a business, and so they make the kinds of films that generate profit.  Blame the parents who took their kid to see Shrek 2 four times.  If people didn't go see or buy these films, they wouldn't be making them.  Occasionally, they get bit, like with Bewitched last summer.  But by the time that usually happens, a new popular trend has come through.

Some of the blame for remakes also has to lay with the current youth, most of whom can't be bothered to watch older films.  So that leaves a huge door open for modernizations and profit.  The Hills Have Eyes is a great example of this, and it's not even 30 years old.  You can just rent the original!

My prediction is that the next trend will be Theatrical Re-releases.  They'll probably re-mix the sound for Dolby Digital and maybe include some scenes cut from the original theatrical release.

Listener

Having read Watchmen, I'd like to see it as a film, but the problem is that it takes place back in the 80s and Hollywood would update it to 2000+ standards.  Then the story would lose something.

QuoteTHE BRITISH star of new superhero movie Watchmen has launched a foul-mouthed tirade against fans of the graphic novel who questioned his casting.

MATTHEW GOODE plays Andrew Veidt/Ozymandias in the movie, expected to be one of the biggest hits of 2009.

But the 30-year-old actor – who has previously appeared in Match Point and Brideshead Revisited – went on the offensive after learning hardcore fans are saying he doesn't suit the character before even watching the film.

I thought it was good.  The music selection was very spot on even during the odd sex scene in Archie. It really could have been about 20-30 minutes shorter, but overall, I liked it.  There were a few people that walked out.

I've never read the novel, but from I was told about the ending, I think that the movie ending was better.  It has a lot less WTFness.

And best line?  When Rorschach is in prison and says, "I'm not locked in here with you! You're locked in here with ME!". That got major cheers.

I have not, however, read the graphic novel/comic book/whatever they based the movie on.

The graphic novel pulls NO punches.

Quartermaine is fished out of an opium den.  Hyde is a savage murderer w/ no respect for life.  The invisible man is a thief, rapist, and all around see you next tuesday.  Mina is no g-d vampire, simply a woman who survived a horrific ordeal with the scars to prove it.

The movie had -none- of this.  The dirtyness was polished away along with any chance at character development.  Characters like Tom Sawyer and Dorian Gray were added to, in my opinion, include more pretty people.

The scene where they all put their hands out for the "lets come together and beat the bad guy from Moulin Rouge" made me throw my bag of skittles at the screen.

I actually really dug League.  You just reminded me.  I should put it in Catchr's/DJ's thread.

Such a travesty of a film.

I just noticed that Stephen Norrington hasn't been allowed to direct another film since.

Yea...about that:

On December 14, 2008, Stephen Norrington announced in Variety that he planned to write and direct a "reinvention" of The Crow. Norrington distinguished between the original and the remake: "Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style."[2] Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media is currently negotiating with Ed Pressman for both the film's rights and financing.

TL;DR - I like the crow and I was a fan of BSG so I'm going to ape that style!

Is there really an audience for another Crow film?  Even the straight to video releases didn't fair that well.

11:42:24 [Gamplayerx] I keep getting knocked up.
11:42:28 [Gamplayerx] Er. OUT!

A friend of mine was Silk Jupiter or whatever the crap she's called for Halloween, so I eventually decided to watch this to figure out who the hell she was.  Good lord, this movie was one of the longest pieces of dreck I've ever seen.  Except the big blue dong, that was entertaining.

dots

I bought the novel a few weeks ago.

So far, it's great. Will have to watch the movie again after...which will probably be months from now.
You're an asshole and I hate you.

swolt

Have I told my story about watching this movie?

We rented it. I thought it was ok, but my wife didn't like it. Until the sex scene with The Owl guy and the hot chick that broke up with huge blue dick guy. She thought that was hot.

So the short story is, I never finished watching it.

Dude.

When did Junto become the place for people to tell stories of getting so turned on by non-porn sex scenes that they had to either have sex or jerk off?

Gross.

Unless we're talking about that hot love scene in Brokeback Mountain.  Had to go to the bathroom in the movie theater after that one!

(that last part is a lie)
we should have kept the quote pyramid up to rape Jessie in the face.

Junto became that RIGHT NOW.

In the movie "Election" there is a sex scene with Mathew Broderick that I always thought was hot. Too bad the rest of the movie sucked.

The sex scene in Amelia, where is she is laying there bored, is good too. Not so much because it's "hot", but more because I can relate to it.

Jessie

If you don't mention Secretary, then you know nothing of hot sex scenes.

But still.

I get that we all get turned on and we all get laid.  I don't need the mental imagery to go with it.

I have not seen Secretary.

It's not like I painted a vivid picture. It's not like I said "It all started on a hot summer day. The cup, my cup, had no idea what was in store for it..."

You're not the only culprit here. :)

I'm just giving you a hard time.

OMG I SAID HARD TIME.  Keep it in your pants.

The blue dong is pretty spectacular in HD.

You all are missing the point. I am reading a graphic novel.

What I learned from this thread:

Everyone likes sex, some people don't like to talk about it.

Some people are actually rather uptight about sex but pretend they really aren't.

There's a dude with a really big blue dong in The Watchmen

Dots is reading a graphic novel.
What the hell is this space used for?

eo sent me 5 comic books (not Watchman, Scott Pilgrim), I'm still on the first one -- there's so much to look at that even though there's so little reading, they take much longer than I had expected.

sucks may have been too strong a word. it just wasn't that good to me.

if Matthew Broderick isn't hacking things or skipping school he just isn't believable.
