So I decided to make some chex mix for friends, mostly Chip, that are going camping this weekend.  I figured chex mix is a necessity for camping, or at least something decent to have around for munching on.

I had no idea it took so effing long to make chex mix.  Why did nobody warn me of this?  Not that I asked.  I should have just bought a few bags from the store from them... would have been way cheaper, though probably not taste as good.  This shit takes four hours to cook.  FOUR HOURS!

"Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?"
I think so, Brain, but how will we get the Spice Girls into the paella?

I looked up "Worlds Best Chex Mix" and got this:

Dry Ingredients

1 box Wheat Chex cereal
1 box Rice Chex
1 box Corn Chex
4 C. Cheerios
1 bag pretzels
1 - 2 lbs mixed nuts

Sauce Ingredients:

1 lb. butter
1 - 1.25 C. Oil
2 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 T. Tabasco sauce
0.5 tsp. celery salt
1.5 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. red (cayenne) pepper
1 tsp. allspice
Accent (MSG) to taste

Optional (my variations in addition to the above, never more than 2 at a time extra):

1 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. cumin

Preheat oven to 200 degrees (F).

Put the trays into the oven and roast for 4 hours. Stir every 20 minutes during the first hour, and every 30 minutes thereafter. Sprinkle Accent liberally before each stirring.

Dry then Catch

the worcestershire sauce thing always threw me for a loop.

My mother always took about an hour and a half to fix the entire recipe and then let it dry/bake

Alice

Oh man.  This really is the best chex mix I've ever eaten.

I think so.  Though I'd cut the recipe in half next time.  It made about 3 gallon bags.

I could send you a gallon, but I'm afraid it might not be as good by then.

Jessie

I haven't met a chex mix variety that I don't like yet.
we should have kept the quote pyramid up to rape Jessie in the face.

This one is a bit spicy.  I decided to add a bit of the cayenne powder every time I stirred it up.  It doesn't hit you at first, though.

Trail is hiking.  Not sitting around eating mix.  Duh.

This thread inspired me.

I'm eating this:

for breakfast.

I don't recommend this to anyone.  I just don't have any breakfast food here, and I'm really hungry, and I've had this half bag of chex mix in my cabinet for forever.

I like the spicy chex mix, I had forgotten about it.  It does not make a good breakfast, though.

Did you add milk? That probably would have made it better.

How is this possible?  It's Chex.  That's inherently breakfast.

And that's bad?
It's just not a very breakfasty flavor.
I don't particularly care for "breakfasty flavors" (except bacon) - so it sounds good to me.

Man, add some bacon and you've got brunch!
