Yeah, if you notice at the bottom they mention how some in the community are upset that this has gained more attention than the recent death of a 16 year old.

I guess I'm jaded, but I find a three month old kitten more inherently innocent than a 16 year old kid.  A teenager can make choices, understand morality, etc.  Not to say that the child's death wasn't horrible or worthy of outrage (since I have zero info about it), but I can see why people make the effort for the cat.
