Title: Our newest addition to the family
Post by: Jessie on April 07, 2009, 09:25:35 AM
Atticus.

Mom's boss and his siblings bought him for their parents, who are like 80, for Christmas.  He's about six months old and way too energetic for octogenarians.

I didn't want a foo foo dog, really, but he's pretty sweet and needed a good home.  So, now he's ours.

Oh and he was named Snowball, but I felt that was far too emasculating for him.

Digger was Walter when we got him.  Because he looked like Walter Matthau.

Do you plan on having any pets without ocular problems?

he looks like a shih-tzu poodle.  am i right?
Title: Re: Our newest addition to the family
Post by: Dry then Catch on April 07, 2009, 01:34:25 PM
seriously though shih-tzu are the best dogs.

some people look at my shih tzu and say "hurr I need a big manly non yipping dog".  Because they have severe insecurities.

shih tzus are hearty, intelligent, afraid of no bigger dog, but doesn't pick fights.  and are quiet unless they have a pressing matter to bring up.

ps if that is actually a lhasa apso, I feel bad for you they suck.

He's supposedly a shihtzu.

He didn't bark at all for hours, but then he barked quite a bit for a minute.  He has a manly bark, not a yippy bark. so that's good.

I think he just needs a better hair cut, it looks like he's adorable, under that bad hair do.  A mohawk might do him good.

yeah thats how they are.  my dog will not bark a peep for weeks, then if something is apparently pissing him off he will NOT STOP.

also watch out for dry grass in your yard.  if he likes to roll around in it their protruding eyes may get poked.

you really don't want to have to pay for eye surgeries then apply ointment for the rest of his life.   believe me.

my suggestion is to cut facial hair as short as possible.  it tends to get in front of their eyes.  and the snout hair will blossom like a flower in all directions

We decided to let Jessie feel less alone and got a puppy.

She's 2.6 lbs, 3months, and named Tiffin

Well, after a month of trying to love this dog and failing, I guess we have decided to let him go live with my sister in law and niece.  They have always wanted a shihtzu, where I never did.  Also, Leah has terrible allergies and will only ever have a dog if it's hypoallergenic, like Atticus is.  Misty has told me from day 1 that she'd love to have him.  I wouldn't go looking for a home for him, but if they really want him, and we merely tolerate him, it seems like the right thing to do, I guess.

He's just way too high strung and has a little dog personality and he is incredibly annoying to me for these reasons.  I like him, and he's cute, but I don't love him.  And you all know how much I love animals.

I feel sad and guilty.

Lighten Up!   You found it a good home, which is a lot more than some people would do.

Exactly.  Better that everyone involved is happy rather than just fulfilling an obligation.

That's how I'm justifying it to myself.  I feel a little like I'm shirking responsibility, though.

You're being more responsible this way.  Better to give a dog to a household that is going to be thrilled to have him, than just to tolerate him.

You'll do a lot better by going to the pound or something with Timothy and finding a dog you guys fall in love with instantly.

I would have thrown Bruce in the dumpster about two dozen times by now if I didn't absolutely love him.  Dogs are going to test your patience now and then and it's kind of important that you still adore the dog, regardless of random weird behavior.

How lucky that that dog has a home either way, don't feel like you're a bad mother.  If the dog isn't the right temperament for the family, then nobody will be happy in the house at all.  I think that yorkies are perfect for us because of their behavior, energy level, size, hypo-allergenic, cuddleness and personality.  We thought about it for 6 months, looked into different dog breeds and such.  I hope you find the perfect dog for your family too BD!
