Title: Dish Washers
Post by: sapphirehart on June 04, 2006, 12:18:06 PM
What is the lifespan of a dishwasher? Mine is ten years old.  I'm having to prewash my dishes by hand before they are put in the dishwasher with the scalding hot water.

Sapph, we all know you're not ten years old.

I'd say 10 years is average.  The one in our VA house was replaced after 1 year (before we moved in).

Since most are selling for $350 to $500, I would replace before I would repair.  Over 10 years, $50 a year to wash dishes is a low price to pay.

In all honesty, I have a dishwasher that is 17 years old (TJ) and one that is 15 years old (Steven).

I thought that was pretty much true of any dishwasher, except the really fancy brand new ones.

Oh, you said preWASH.  Nevrmind.  I was thinking preRINSE.

Even with the fancy new dishwashers, it depends on your water pressure and quality.

When we bought this house, the previous owners put in a new dishwasher.  I still have to rinse the plates and wipe away the larger chunks of leftover food or else it just cakes on and needs to be chipped off.

Admittedly, it's kind of a low-end dishwasher, but by the time we need a new one hopefully that no-pre-rinse model will be a little cheaper.

My parents have had the same dishwasher in the house since they moved in in 1983.  They've had the door replaced, but that's it.

Yeah... you pretty much have to pre-rinse everything you put in a dishwasher.  I imagine if you didn't, eventually the food chunks would collect and build up somewhere and either rot or clog something up.

My dishwasher appliance in my house is non-functional.  It just covers up the hole in the floor and provides a place for the small cat to hide from the big cat.

My other dishwasher will turn 40 this year.  He does an ok job.  :)

My parents have had the same dishwasher I THINK since 1968.  They may have had to replace it once.  However, my dad is capable of fixing anything, so I'm sure that has something to do with the longevity.  Hrm- maybe I should have him look at mine.

I just bought a new one about 6 months ago.

I'm pretty sure you could put a burnt, caked on, cemented pot roast in my dad's dishwasher and the pan would come out magically clean and sparkling.  I bet the thing cost as much as my house.

Our new kitchen has an awesome dishwasher. I can't wait to use it. It even has a germ killing setting. The thing is a freaking autoclave!

My parents are all chemists.  Lots of autoclaves.  When I was little, they used get a bushel of crabs and cook them in the lab.

They sure are... all gross and slimey.  *shudder*

I'm glad we don't have any chemists in this group.

When I was little, Gamp's parents gave me crabs.  Therefore, I hate chemists as well.
