Title: Sufjan Stevens
Post by: Dry then Catch on June 01, 2006, 12:18:38 PM
Come On! Feel The Illinoise!

The term indie rock gets thrown around too much and same with the whole pretty-boy folky singer songwriter.

I have to say Sufjan Stevens transcends all that with his acoustic guitar, piano, alto sax, electric bass, drums, banjo, Wurlitzer, flute, accordion, glockenspiel and sings songs about zombies, prayer, Abe Lincoln, serial killers and is still simple, approachable and likeable music.  Yet its not some gimmick comedy album, nor even written with the levity of They Might Be Giants.

has anyone else heard him yet?

He plans on making a CD for every state in the Union.  he has michigan and illinois thus far.

I have to say every artist the legitimate review side of The Onion has pimped, has been awesome thus far.

I have heard nothing but good buzz about this dude for well over a year now.  I just haven't heard his music yet.

He gets name dropped on the new Snow Patrol CD.

I knew YOU would be the first person to reply.  I think its right up your alley.  I only have the MP3s but I will rip and dump them when I buy the CD.  I just started listening to his stuff last week.

All the reviews make him sound like its weird music based on the subject matter, lyrics and such.  And it sort of is, but its also instantly likable, simple and easy to understand.

interview.

They play a ton of his stuff on the local college radio station here, and have been doing so for well over a year now.  I'm pretty familiar with it.
