Title: Too much media choice
Post by: Listener on April 06, 2006, 11:07:10 AM
Do we have too many choices in individual media?

Example 1:  I have an XM with 30 presets.  By the time I finish going through them I've forgotten what I was listening to in the first place.

Example 2:  Even with standard cable, I have about 80 channels.  I watch maybe 15 of them on a regular basis (not including local channels like ABC, CBS, NBC, etc) and still there's too much stuff going on.

Discuss.

I think that if the overall quality went up, we could allow the quantity to come down.  As it is, I have seventy-some channels, and there's hardly ever anything on.

I have about 70 cable channels.  I have watched all of them at one point (even the Sci Fi Channel for 5 minutes!)

I don't have sattelite radio (yet).

Better too many than too few.

With an antenna, I receive one channel on my TV.   :)
With Netflix, I receive nearly infinite movies and TV shows of my choosing, without commercials.   ;D

Yeah, but with sports, commercials are the time you get up to go to the bathroom (except during the Superbowl... the only good time to hit the can is during the halftime show which invariably sucks).  So they have a purpose.

I'm contemplating adding the unlimited local and long-distance service that Time Warner has.  That's another 40 bucks, but it's less than half of what I'm paying MCI for the same thing.

I have digital cable and DSL for $60.  I'm going to add a local phone line soon and that'll kick it up to $88.
