I remember when they performed it together live for the first time after having been estranged. It was on the David Letterman show and they both started crying. It was very touching.

I remember that, too!  I don't know if I saw it when it happened, but I've seen it, and it was really sweet.  I think they always loved each other.  Maybe.  Or maybe not.  Maybe they were constantly dodging hits that the other had put out on them.  It could go either way, really.
