Title: Real Techs Help ! exclamation re-format Linux to NTFS
Post by: Dry then Catch on March 26, 2005, 04:13:47 PM
Ah i made my dad by a new computer for himself a $179 AMD 2200.  Good deal right?  well it came with no bundled software except for that awful Linspire OS.

I want to reformat that damn drive to NTFS and pop in burned version of WIndows XP.  Our other computer's backup XP disk and a hacked CD version aren't booting up with an automatic format like I thought it would.

I hate Linspire its like the non-compatibility of Linux combined with awful commercialism of WIndows.

I'm sure DownSouth's number is in the contact thread.  He should be able to walk you through it.

I'm just as bad, if not worse.

Catch,
You need to check to make sure that the CD is a boot device in the BIOS.  As your comp is booting up, look for the option to enter "Setup" or the "BIOS".  You're going to have to root around to find the "boot device priority" and move the CD drive up to the top of that list and then boot the XP cd.  Good luck.  I'll keep checking the thread for more questions.

sorry i fell asleep for 3 hours.

Yes it is booting from the CD.  but even so it is trying to install some temp files on the "C" drive which doesn't exsist on this format.  I was using a "restore XP" CD, but I am going to get the real deal from a shady character tonight.  But as long as I reformat it should be good right? its not like AMD processors havesomething against Windows XP do they?

Nah, should be fine.  The WindowsXP install disc has a format utility.

hey thanks for the help.

i couldn't find a cd key for the XP cd I got, but it served to re-format the drive to NTFS, which was good enoguh for me to install the crappy Dell backup version I have.  A little elbow grease and some ameteur piracy (uh i dont condone this) saved me tons of CASH and TIME
