So I was going to try to find plans for bedroom furniture and ask my dad to make it, but he said he's too old and dressers/chests of drawers would be too complicated for him. Bah.
So instead, I'm looking for cheap furniture. I found some crap on overstock.com. It's cheap, but it's made of composite board and fibreboard. And assembly is required. Think it's worth it?
I think I'd either get the classy "oak finish" or the black and replace the tacky handles.

I don't buy stuff from that fascist company (anymore)
Reason being?
The CEO has some pretty right-leaning, barefoot and pregnant, views.
Have you checked used furniture stores and/or Goodwill type stores in your area?
Is there a "freecycle" webgroup in your area?
I'm partial to actual wood when it comes to furniture. Dazie's suggestions are good. As are yard sales and the classified ads.

whats wrong with wood chips pressed and held together in board shapes with glue and then covered with a giant woodgrain contact paper? its called recycling, for 3rd or 14th world countries.
Seriously check good will. People give them really nice stuff just because they buy new stuff.
There is always Craigslist.

war - mans way of saying your opinion doesnt count, i dont like you, i want your land. Sometimes faster than letting nature take its course to thin the herd.
Erica and I recently went to a furniture store in search of a buffet-type chest of drawers thing for our living room. What we found was a $500 (on sale) thing that looked moderately nice, but definitely had plywood in it, and I wasn't too sure about the rest of it. The salesman said it was "Solid wood," but I think that's salesman speak for "It's not MDF....that you can see." The whole experience kinda turned me off to buying furniture at all, since I can't get something really made completely of solid, non-plywood (I'd settle for something with plywood and veneers if I could be sure it wasn't MDF under them) for less than a completely obnoxious price. We decided that we'd look at antiques instead, we just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Particle board weighs a ton.
Fuckin' A. Instead of MDF for "Medium Density Fiberboard," they should call it "BHS" For "Black Hole Sheetgoods."

Hey, my mom was trying to sell her buffet-type chest of drawers thing at her garage sale & couldn't. Want me to see if she still has it?
Yes. Let me know. :)

Yes. Let me know. :)
It's like a 3.5 foot tall, probably 5 feet long thing. 3 columns of drawers, but the middle column of drawers is behind two doors that open up. I think there's a slab of marble - or fake marble in the middle of the top of it.
I'll ask her tonight if she still has it. I think she was looking for like $50 for it.

She still has it - she also said she'd make you a good deal just to get it out of her garage. Plus, she has a nightstand that matches it and a King sized headboard that matches it too - if you want either of those.
I emailed you about this - but I have like 3 different email addresses for you in my gmail book, so I thought I'd write it up here too.
