Title: Green Tomato
Post by: sapphirehart on July 21, 2005, 07:41:13 PM
I snagged a couple from my father-in-laws garden on my way past the garden on my way home this afternoon.  (He shouldn't have planted the tomato so close to my drive.)

I think I am going to batter them up and fry them to eat with dinner.

I've never had green tomatoes, but I like tomatillos.  I've heard they're similar.

I have a good recipe for tomatillo/green tomato, avocado and kidney bean salad if you want it.

Where's my air sickness bag?  I hate, HATE fried green tomatos.  My mother used to cook them all the freakin' time when I was a kid and made me eat at least 2 per meal.  They were so disugusting.

Conversely, I love regular red tomatos with a little salt and pepper.  Plus, they make any sammich extra yummy.  The summer tomatos are the best, they are sweeter and more full flavored.

I only eat tomatoes once they are processed into something useful, like ketchup or pizza sauce.

Same here. Although I do like them fresh in any Mexican food.

There aint nothin in the world that I like better
Than bacon n lettuce n homegrown tomatoes
Up in the mornin, out in the garden
Get you a ripe one, dont pick a hard 'un
Plant 'em in the spring, eat em in the summer
All winter without em is a culinary bummer
I forget all about the sweatin and the diggin
Every time I go out and pick me a big un

Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes
What would life be like without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money cant buy
That's true love and home grown tomatoes

You can go out to eat an thats for sure
But theres nothin a homegrown tomatoe wont cure
Put em in a salad, put em in a stew
You can make your own tomatoe juice
You can eat em with eggs, eat em with gravy
You can eat em with beans, pinto or navy
Put 'em on the side, put em in the middle
Home grown tomatoes on a hot cake griddle

Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes
What would life be like without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money cant buy
That's true love and home grown tomatoes

If Is to change this life I lead
You could call me Johnny Tomatoe Seed
Cause I know what this country needs
Home grown tomatoes in every yard you see
When I die dont bury me
In a box in a cold dark cemetary
Out in the garden would be much better
Cause I could be pushin up a home grown tomatoe

Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes
What would life be like without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money cant buy
That's true love and home grown tomatoes

A truer song was never written.

Apparently Dan Quayle wrote out the lyrics, though.
