Title: Shut down or let it run?
Post by: Jessie on July 01, 2005, 07:48:34 AM
Hey computer people, do you leave your computer running all the time or shut it down when it isn't in use.

I've heard that starting it up is harder on it than just idling, much like a car.

The shutting down being harder on a computer is mostly a myth. The better reason to use the Energy Star sleep feature is to save energy.

I shut down the laptops, but leave the desktop running unless there is a storm (and I have a UPS).

I shut down my laptop, but the servers in my office run all the time.  File and app servers aren't all that effective if they are shut down.
