Title: Good Documentaries
Post by: Dry then Catch on January 07, 2009, 11:41:37 AM
I watched Surfwise this weekend
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/surfwise/ (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/surfwise/)
and realized there have been a lot of funny documentaries the past decade or so, besides the gimmicky mainstream Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock stuff.

(Surfwise is about a Bohemian surfing family of 10 that later recounts the mixed memories despite all the seeming allure of that lifestyle, forced on them by their doctor father)

I'd say my other favorites were:  Spellbound, King of Kong and Trekkies 1.

There have been some pretty good ones like Shadow Company (about modern mercenaries, Boys from Baraka (inner city black kids sent to Africa, no its not a white supremacist movie).

what else would people recommend?

I have Surfwise in from Netflix.

Spellbound is awesome.

I hear WordPlay is good.

Darkon.  Confessions of a Superhero.  Crazy Love.

If you want to go dark, try The Bridge.

I hear Standard Operating Procedure is quite good, but haven't seen it yet.

I have Surfwise in from Netflix.

It's in my queue.  The Paskowitz family is well known in the surfer community, so I figured Ursus would dig it.

I suggest Red Hot Ballroom.

Not sure.  We haven't been around many surfers lately.

Apparently.  I've never seen the movie but I've seen a good bit of footage and know some of the basic story.  Could it have been part of some other film/doc and that's what I'm thinking of?

Just finished watching it.  Not bad- Ursus reminded me that he's actually surfed with the youngest Paskowitz, back in the day.

Not a lifestyle I'd ever want to actually LIVE (11 people in a 24 ft camper) but it does have allure.

Just that the kid (kid- he's about our age) was a great surfer, but had a kind of a chip on his shoulder.  Evidently he was tired of being mistaken for his brother Izzy (Israel) so on his board he had written "I'm not Israel"

it was pretty evident all of them (except one, I thought it was the youngest) had massive chips on their shoulder.  I guess it goes to show no matter how "cool" your upbringing, values cannot be force fed.

The youngest is the tattooed guy I think.  The one without the chip (if we're thinking about the same guy) is the one that wanted to buy the boat, right?

Another thing Ursus said was that "Monster" whatever band sucked ass.  They used to practice at the joco where he went to school.

All in all it's a pretty effed up family.

Did Ursus grow up in Hawaii?

No- Southern California.

The Paskowitz family drove around the continental US, but Doc and his wife live in Hawaii now evidently.

Surfwise is a documentary.

I think he was asking if you saw the actual documentary, or if for some reason someone made a documentary about making that documentary.

Got that part.  But still, somehow, not having seen the actual doc, I've seen quite a bit of their story on tv in some part.
