Alright, issue #2.

#2) How do I go about handling all aspects of the site. (i.e. hosting it, domain registration, etc. so that I don't have to rely on that person.)
This person seems to be ignoring me.
I'm not happy.
Do you all know of anything I can do? I can't even access my cpanel.
I can offer no techincal help.
I can only hug and offer to bust kneecaps.
Sorry hun, everything I know about computers I learned from DS.
I can help you with most of it, except for getting into the server it's currently on. I think I still have some hosting space left, depending on how much space and bandwidth you need.

If this person keeps ignoring me, do I have any avenues to take? Or am I screwed?

You'll have to tell him that you want to pull the files out of it and transfer the registration. I know for sure that I can't help you with that. I checked the registration, and there's no way in hell they'll respond to anything from me.
Who owns teh domain name? There are website harvesting programs.

Her friend owns the domain name. It hasn't been harvested.
Damn.

Thanks for checking. :( I really hope this isn't a vindictive measure prompted by some...others.
Info, what is the harvester thing?
There are programs (hell, Frontpage does it) that can cull all of the code and images off of a website and put them on your harddrive.
The only issue then, is getting the domain moved.
ETW: That assumes the site is running - you might be able to cull off of the wayback machine website.

I'm not going to speculate on that, but I know what you mean. Just let me know if you can get him to respond, and we can get you transferred pretty quickly.

Yeah, I can't access anything.
And I don't actually have any pages up, yet. This is more of a "behind the scenes" site that has a spot for my guild on WoW and other things.

A DNS search is telling me that it's a server failure, so who knows what's going on with it.

Well, if he responds, I'll let you know ASAP, if not...... well..... I only have a few months more onthe domain registration, I believe, so if it's a yearly renewal, I'll grab it then.
Did you try to see if any of that person's domains were up and running?
Is it possible that the dude's email server is on the same machine? That would explain why you're not getting any responses, if the server is down.

Well, one of the sites is not there. That certainly could explain it, but I also IMed the person.

July 6 is when it's up. Might not be available instantly, though. You could always grab the .net or .org names, though.

How do you find these things out? How soon is a domain available? If I have to re-register it and get a new host, I'm assuming I'll lose all files, correct? And what kind of hosting service do you have? Rather, what is the interface? Is it easy to create pages and design them or am I better off using dreamweaver and copying/pasting the resulting code?

If you have to reregister and switch hosts, you're starting with new space. It all depends on getting access to your files there. They can almost always be placed on a new server, but if you can't get them, of course you'll have to start over.
What I have is server space that I can give out or resell. Each space has its own URL, its own space and its own control panel. The interface is CPanel. There's no sitebuilder there, but I have yet to see a sitebuilder on a host that even comes close to Dreamweaver.

i guess its back to limewire for my fodder
I looked in my proxy logs to get the address of your site, in case the DNS server is the only problem. I found the address and tried to request your site from there, and got the cpanel "site not configured" page. Chances are if there were a technical problem, it would have been fixed by now. :(
Looks to me like whoever is responsible for the site either cancelled the account or didn't pay. I can't say if the hosting provider would have toasted the files or not. If it's a non-pay, they probably have the site in limbo.
If you want, I can give him a call.
Don't forget -- I have plenty of space and bandwidth also if you want. I assure you that you wouldn't be put in a situation like this if you used it. :) I don't, however, have cpanel. I would pretty much set you up with a way to drag-and-drop files around on the server, and help implement anything more involved than that as needed. :)
Oh yeah, and on top of my host's backups, I make backups at home daily.
So ... if you find out that the files are gone, you would still need to talk to him to get the domain name transferred to your hands, or wait for it to expire.
Ugh.
still no movement or communication on any of this, youphie?
No, and I just sent him my last email (to all of the emails I have for him) letting him know that it's my last email, and if I still hear nothing then I am going to assume that he's purposefully ignoring me and that he has turned malicious.

Let me know if you need Don Dottie to pay him a visit while I am down there this weekend.
Ugh
Quoteok, bad news.
I started sharing my hosting with a friend to help off-set my cost. He
wanted to go through and delete the unused domains to free up some
space. I gave him my list of current domains to leave alone ... and I
totally forgot about yours. He 86ed it with the rest of them.
I tried to recover the files, but they are gone. I set it back up with
username ******* and password ******. I just did it, and it sometimes
takes up to 48 hours before the nameservers pick it up.
Sorry about that *sheepish look*
As far as you taking it over, first you need somewhere to host it. You
can get it cheap, like $4 a month, through howahya.net (and I'm pretty
sure the .net part is owned by DC and not Sniz, but you can ask him.)
I can point the site to go there. After the first year is up (which
ends in 39 days) I can transfer control of youphoric.com to you. It
cost $7 a year.
EDITED by Gamp: this thread is public
So the answer was somewhere between "He's being a raging f*cknuckle" and "the system was down, yo."
Sorry to hear you lost your stuff. Maybe starting from scratch will be cathartic. Build something bigger, better, stronger faster. :)
Meh.
I still advocate the kneecap thing.
Sorry, Youph.
:( >:( :(
My offer still stands. If you want to switch the hosting somewhere else before you get proper control of the domain, you can.
what a fuckwit. "here! i'll host you! let me!!!"...."oh. i forgot i was hosting you..... *sheepish smile*."
i'm sorry you lost your stuff, youphie.
