Do any of you use an enclosure for an external hard drive as opposed to buying a dedicated external hard drive? I want a good enclosure so that I can swap out drives and save some money in the process, but I don't know of any good ones.
Tiger Direct has a bunch that are cheap, but I don't know if they are any good or not.

You're the best ever, DS!
there was a thread on tfark about these a while back - and no, of course i didn't bookmark it. what do you take me for?
i've been thinking about one of these as well. it seems that the fark suggestions were a little higher than these. this was about 3 months ago, i think, and i seem to remember the prices at about $40 - $60.
i understand that basically... that was no help at all.
they're cool though! and i could also use one, so let me know what you find out.....
but what does it doooooooo?
well, you'll have to correct me if i'm wrong, reburn, but that's basically a working case for an extra hard drive. you buy a backup hard drive, slap it into one of those babies, hook it up via the USB2 or firewire, and you can backup your entire hard drive at 480.
i was thinking about using one for my laptop. i was afraid the hard drive was tanking. i bought a new hard drive that i was going to install, and was thinking about using one of those enclosers to transfer everything over to the new hard drive, then i could install it and i would just need a boot disc.
i am astounded by my own level if geekiness if any of that is correct. that was how it was going to work IN MY MIND.
Thanks, I actually understood that. :)

Yep. That's what it is. I can't see the point of buying an "external hard drive" for more than $100 when I can get a $20 enclosure and an 80 GB drive to put in it for $40. Plus, I have drives sitting around and stuff.

i know. it's the "drives sitting around" that also make it a good idea. i just lugged home an older desktop from work that was being decomissioned, and i was going to part it out, and using its 40 gb hard drive as a backup drive for now is a really nice and exceptionally cheap idea.
