Anyone?
I'm more of a Blues guy, myself. But Jazz is cool sometimes
I don't like jazz or blues.

Anyone?
What about it? I like the older stuff- Thelonious Monk is a fucking genius.
Monk is good, oh hell yeah...
What do you think about Miles?
I'm inclined to agree with OOB here.... I'm more of a blues type.
However, I have been exposed to some interesting and "out there" jazz and can appreciate the complexities, if not the melodies.
(go figure... ::) )
I definitely dig Blues, but older Jazz is great mood music. The newer stuff I don't care for, especially the R&B infused stuff.
I've never really listened, but if it is good music, I'll like it.

I wish I had decent taste in music.

I know, it is sad.
Jazz, goooood.
I end up listening to the "lite" stuff when I am in the car with the wife, but there is a public station here that plays the hard core stuff I switch to when I can.
Interesting story, the "lite" station is owned by Clear Channel, who donated a large chunk of money to the Public Jazz station (it is small, noncommercial, and teaches HS students how to run a radio station, even though they do employ professional DJs and have live traffic). Clear Channel thought is was in their best interest to keep the hard core people happy, and kids educated. Go figure the corporate heart.
Info- you're in Annapolis?

Not yet, this happened in Minneapolis, we should be moving May 1.
Annapolis has the best radio station ever - RNR 103.1

Back on topic, jazz. I've never really listened to any. Where should I start?

Jimmy Smith
Wes Montgomery
Thelonius Monk
Miles Davis ( don't listen to Bitches Brew, it's a bit out there and not really "for" new folk )

For some more contemporary stuff, you might want to check out Karate's Unresolved and anything by Tom Waits.
Also I forgot to mention Charlie Christian in my previous post. Don't over look him.
I remember a radio station out of the Fox valley (WAPL) that would have a "Sunday Morning Jazz program" from 8am to noon every Sunday. The rest of the days of the week, they were Classic rock. VERY nice way to spend a lazy Sunday morning.
I used to like the Jazz but with no Karl Malone and John Stockton they aren't very good anymore.

Would you like me to send a mix to the music dump? ( which, by the way, I will be changing the password to very soon )
I would so love that!!

Probably the best place to start is at one of those headphone thingys at B&N or Borders. Go to the jazz section and listen to the freebies. You'll figure out what you like and what you don't.
If you want to take the plunge, there are a couple of things you can pick-up almost anywhere. I'll give you a couple of artist/album combos that you can listen to, entertain to and even do dancing and romancing.
1) Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"
2)Charlie Parker "...and Strings"
3)Dave Brubeck "Take Five/Time Out"
4)Oscar Peterson Trio pick one
5)Count Basie "The Complete Atomic Basie"
These are all from the mid 1950's/early 1960's. None of them sound like piano tuning contests. Most of them work in several contexts, generally begging for some kind of cocktail
(easy) like a good martini or gimlet or somesuch. Dazie hears these on a fairly regular basis, and she digs them (ask her). Most of the jazz played today owes somthing to this group of artists/albums, making them a great place to start (or finish :-\) exploring jazz.
If I can figure out how to create MP3's or wavefiles or the like I'd be glad to shoot you a cut or two.
Think of in terms of the first Rock album you bought. You just sort of bought what family/friends bought and went from there. We all buy stuff we don't end up liking, no harm done.
I hope this helps.
There's an 11 track mix on the clubhouse dump for you gamp. Password has been changed to 'iloveanal'

GIRL!! Try watching the HDTV channels. They play live blues and jazz almost every night. Austin Live is great. Right now their playin ABBA: The Movie, not that it's jazz but you get the idea. You like that.
ABBA: The Movie? How did you let me go to bed at a reasonable hour? Did you record it for me?
Hehe. I just looked, and he totally did! Thank you, Grumpus!!
And thanks, Bish - that's awesome! It'll be the soundtrack for my day.
And thanks, Ursus, for the excellent information.
+ a gazillion for you all! (or until I get tired of clicking - but I do so love clicky things)

Hmm. A clicky thing I didn't love.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVED clicking on it. But I just as much enjoyed clicking the little x in the corner.
That's ok. It is rather annoying.
Here, this is much more entertaining.
