Title: Major pet food recall
Post by: Beefy on March 18, 2007, 08:56:06 AM
List of foods at bottom of article.  Better check it against what you feed your furry family members (Swolt included).

Crap.  I just fed my cats recalled food this morning.  5 out of the remaining 10 pouches in the box are also on the recalled list.

Why is "Fine Feline Cat" under dog food???

I hope the cats are fine.  Midnight eats Purina One.  I spend more on her food and snacks than I do mine.

They're still alive, so that's good.  They prefer the cheapo brand.  I tried to get them to eat the pricey stuff, but they like junk food.

Butters eats some $3 Purina stuff.  I think it's Purina.  I can't remember.  It's cheap.  It's what she liked before I got her.  Good for her, good for my bank account.

I was shopping my local Walmart yesterday and I curiously checked to see if they had removed the recalled food from the shelves.  It was still there.  I looked around for a clerk to mention it to them but of course, you can never find one when you need one.

My dogs eat dry food.

It's very specific lot numbers and manufacture dates for those brands.  For the cats' food, it was 5 (6) pouches out of the box.

Does she supplement with vermin? I heard that cats do that.

How does rat poison just happen to get into the food manufacturing process?

I'm glad  Butters only eats dry food.

I think it was all wet foods, right?

it's kind of odd that they want me to register just so i can look at their online products.

how much does the food cost, dazie? do you have it shipped, or is it available where you are?

i am starting to freak out a little bit over the dog food thing.

note to jess - yes, it was all wet food. but since it's showing up in other places, i'm starting to wonder.

(do they make wet pig food??)

My mom found out tonight that both of her dogs have been eating tainted food.

F*ck whoever is responsible.

I don't actually follow that guy's routine, so I switched my post.

China can't digest cooked fat, so she's eaten nothing but raw since we got her.  She eats raw chicken parts (thighs mostly), raw ground turkey or beef, raw chicken disgusto parts, raw eggs, raw veggies, raw raw raw...  sometimes we cook up oatmeal or rice for her, but don't add any butter or oil.  We do pour olive oil on her food though.  She's fond of carrots and apples, bananas are a special treat.  Sometimes we'll grind up kale and other veggies with flaxseed and oregano.

Zeus just eats anything.  *lol*

We also give them an enzyme suppliment called "Prozyme"

I found out last night that Dudley has a lump.  Probably a cyst.  Probably benign.  Still, he's not even seven years old.  And while I know this is common for dogs of all types, I still say f*ck you world and the horse you rode in on.  Some creatures don't deserve discomfort.

Then again, this could be karma for the baby possum he nearly gave a heart attack out back about an hour ago.

Wow.  Butters gets the Kroger knockoff of the  Purina stuff Donald was feeding her.  And treats.  And sometimes cooked meat.  And lots of love.

I feel like a bad mother after reading China's menu.  Hell, I feel kind of jealous of China.  I think she eats better than me.  I'd like mine cooked though, please.

She certainly eats better than I do.

And she doesn't get all of that all the time.  We're really much too lax on the veggies.

The important part is that she gets chicken parts with bones in.  If they aren't cooked, they're still pliable and she can digest them and suck out the nutrients.

where is the lump? what did the vet say? and what is the plan?

you're right that it's probably nothing to worry about, but i know that it is still a huge huge worry.

even though dudley hates me, please give him a special pat (better yet! a snack!) from me.

that's the part that has always intrigued/worried me about the diet. god knows my dogs would go absolutely deliriously insane if i started feeding them anything like that. but it sounds like it's been very very safe and a very good idea for your fourleggeds. maybe i should consider some changes.

It worried me too, until the lady that started us with it explained that the dogs "eat like wolves eat."  So- yes- they eat raw bones, but not the brittle cooked ones.  Those are called "gutbusters" for a reason...

Dudley adores you.

The cyst is about 2/3rd a way down his torso, right above the left side of his abdomen.

My mother, who thankfully has much experience in such things, will be taking a look at him this weekend.  I assume I will be taking him to the vet during the week next week to have them verify it is benign.

I don't mind.  I'd sell everything I own to keep him healthy.

he's at the age where fatty tumors can start to pop up as well - sophie has a very large one on her side that we keep an eye on. those are nothing to worry about, but of course... they are worrisome.

i spent thousands of dollars on surgeries and treatments for phoebe alone, and it was worth every penny.

maybe that possum was having to work out his own bad karma from a previous life. the monks say we should rejoice when something bad happens to us because it means that we have laid a karmic debt to rest. plus, he totally made dudley's evening. so, if you're jewish instead of buddhist, it was a mitzvah that possum did.

that possum is still hyperventilating under a bush somewhere, fanning himself and saying "jesus CHRIST, i can't believe that just HAPPENED, i'm having a heart attack!"

(this is funny in my head because i've been watching eddie izzard endlessly on youtube for the last two days, so all that is said in an eddie izzard possum voice, while wearing makeup and heels)

(ciao)

Our older dogs only eat canned food that is veterinary prescribed or fresh cooked turkey. Our younger dog eats only leftover canned veterinary food or dry food with turkey drippings.

Our younger dog is getting a little fat.
