Title: More of a moral quandry, really
Post by: Jessie on November 08, 2006, 05:02:30 PM
So I have no laptop, so when I'm out of town, I'm stuck using the public 'business center' at the hotel.

This computer has so much crap on it, it is unreal.  EVery toolbar you can imagine, weatherbug, all sorts of real this and real that, pokerstars, betzip (what IS that)...so I'm tempted to install and run adaware, just for the hell of it, since I'm gonna be stuck with it for three days.

If everyone else can install all that shit, I should be able to fix it, right?

(aside: cocktail party in the lobby with two free drinks tonight.  Huzzah)

So, what's the issue?  None that I see.

I am!  I am!

I hope it kills a bunch of this shit without me needing to uninstall anything.  That's far too much effort.

I just don't like looking at this crap.

I"m wondering if this is going to piss off some slacker hotel employee who has used this computer for their gambling addiction.

I am not kidding, I have NEVER seen a machine with this much shit on it.  It's like they found every horrible piece of spyware and adware on the internet and installed it.

Too bad.  They shouldn't be using company property for an illegal activity.  That there is a fireable offense.

Yeah, I think I can live with the guilt.

when you're done, grab a manager and tell them you spent some time cleaning up their systems, then suggest they use a piece of software called Deep Freeze :P

I just uninstalled a bunch of crap, because hey, what else do I have to do?

Now I"m gonna reboot this bastard and see how much of it survives, then run adaware again, and maybe avg's stuff (because swolt showed me their adware stuff and it seems to work REALLY well).

Well, that was what?  Five hours ago?  I'm guessing she bricked it.  Should we take bets?

I didn't realize that two other people from my company were staying here, and they found me and dragged me away for a couple of hours.

This computer is running much better now.

I didn't do the AVG thing yet.  Maybe tomorrow.

She hacked into Spank-a-vision, and is playing with the pearl right now.

At least that is what I am dreaming.

Is AVG good? I've been using zone alarm but it freezes my internet sometimes during scans.

I use both.  It seems to work just fine.

zone alarm is a firewall. AVG has an anti-virus and an anti-spyware program. You can use them together

The free version of Zone Alarm was awful with sharing internet connections.  The pro version is much better at it.  I got tired of it and bought a router with a built-in firewall.  I use Avast anti-virus at home because it is free and very effective.

Speaking of anti virus etc...

HEY SWOLT!

What was the name of that scanning program I got from you?  That virus finding one...  I can't remember what it's called so I can't remember where I put it so I can't run it.

but the anti-virus and anti-spyware on my site are out of date so use the computer heaven links for those.
