so, i saw this this past weekend, and it's one of the best movies i've seen in quite a while.

i know, that was actually longer than an eo review.

Is that about the guy that got mauled?
Underneath this flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character.

yes. well, he got killed and eaten by a bear, as did his girlfriend. he was an actor and - in my opinion - had a kind of breakdown. he somehow ended up going out to kodiak alaska, where he fell in love with grizzly bears and spent the next 13 summers of his life living with them. he filmed the bears and himself for the last 6 years of his time there. the film is made up of his footage of himself and the bears (in the footage used in the film, he is always in the frame talking about the bears; sometimes he shows himself near/with the bears).

i don't always like werner herzog films, but this is very beautifully made and is moving and intriguing. because tim treadwell took so much footage of himself, and because he had been an actor, his relationship to the camera and to his invisible audience is very unusual and intense.

tim says he wanted to save the bears. he really wanted to be a bear, and wanted them to accept him in that way. it's a very intense and interesting commentary on our experience of the wildness of the world, and what we project onto that, and the ways we can be a part of that and the ways that we can't. it's a great movie.

I'll watch this movie if it has the following scene:

<Guy> Bears are scerene, gentle creatures with a stunning intell-- *BEAR CRASHES INTO FRAME AND MAULS HIM*

maybe you should skip it, then.....

although there is a GIANT BEAR FIGHT. however, it does not end with one of the bears being beheaded by the other.

Look ma'am, I have my standards.  Does it at least have the following scene:

*a bear stands in the distance in the woods, looking off camera*
<Guy> As you can see the bear is majestic.  With a subtle grace.
*a football arcs into screen and nails the bear in the crotch.  Bear crumples to ground moaning*

again, i am forced to disappoint you. however, during the GIANT BEAR FIGHT, one of the bears takes a crap, and then tim talks about it when he's doing the post-fight analysis.

One of the fighting bears takes a dump in the fight?  Does it go like this?

*Two bears square off, trading jabs and punches.   One tries to do the Sugar Ray foot-dance but doesn't really pull it off.  The other does the Ali arm twirl.   A bell dings and both bears retreat to opposite trees while a host of smaller bears come and work him over, giving him pep talks and letting him drink( but not swallow, of course ) a bit of water.  One of the bears drunk no good brother in law bears makes an off color comment that the filmer seems to find funny.  A bear in a stripped black and white shirt comes over and talks to one of the fighters*
<Shirted Bear>grumble grumble grrr (subtitles:  Can you contine? )
<Fighting Bear>mrrr grumble bark(subtitles:  I have to take a dump that could choke a goddamned moose)
<Shirted Bear>...(subtitles: ... )

that part is correct. the shirted bear was off-camera.

From what I read, Herzog refrained from actually airing the audio of the man getting mauled.  Instead, he filmed himself hearing that audio with headphones.  It's nice to see someone use a little discretion and yet still come away with something powerful.

i may have to watch this

that's true. and it's interesting - you hear about the existance of the audio early in the film; the coroner is interviewed and gives a description of some of what he heard when he listened to it, and then it's mentioned at least one more time, maybe twice, before you know that herzog ever had access to it. it's a good reminder that it's human nature to be both repulsed and curious about something like that. and so, later in the film, when you see herzog listening to it, the camera remains on the face of the woman who is watching him for most of the time - she was a good friend of tim's and executor of his estate. she has never listened to the tape. the scene is powerful and moving, because the horror and sadness of what herzog is hearing is reflected on her face.

really. this is a very powerful film.

See it for free tomorrow night on the Discovery Channel.

Well, it's not free in the sense that you pay for cable, but you were were already paying for cable, so in a sense it is free.

What about the people who don't have cable?

So is the Discovery channel showing the movie, or a discussion of the movie?  I'm watching it now, and I'm just not sure if this is it or not.
