1. One book that changed your life.
Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz.  This ignited a curiosity about the American Civil War that has led to (what some would call) a full blown obsession.

2. One book you have read more than once.
Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.  This is the one I grab for long plane trips and doctor's visits.  Plus I'm a huge nerd so it works well in that respect.  Cryptology!  Treasure!  Computers!  Exciting battles!  Exotic locations!

3. One book you would want on a desert island
Survive on a Desert Island by Claire Llewellyn.

4. One book that made you laugh.
Cryptonomicon.  Every single time I read it.  It even makes me laugh when I'm not reading it.  There are parts that make me giggle constantly.  PIG TRUCK!

5. One book that made you cry.
A Tale of Two Cities.  It seemed so unfair and so noble to my 10th grade self.

6. One book you wish you had written.
The Harry Potter books.  To be able to write something that reaches so many people...

7. One book you wish hadn't been written.
This list is huge.  Anything by Nicholas Sparks- what dreck.  Most anything by Charles Dickens (except ToTC!).  Any of the Brian Herbert Dune books- awful.  There are so many more...

8. One book you are currently reading.
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.  I can only take it in small doses, so it takes forever to read, but I like it very much.

9. One book you have been meaning to read.
Manhunt: The 12 Day Chase to Catch Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson.  Cuz, you know- I'm obsessed.

"Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?"
I think so, Brain, but how will we get the Spice Girls into the paella?

1. One book that changed your life.
Probably the "Sector General" series by James White.  Possibly the least-anthrocentric sci fi I've ever seen.

2. One book you have read more than once.
Only one?  I've read most of my books more than once.  My copy of "Moving Pictures" has been read so many times it's falling apart.

3. One book you would want on a desert island
"How to Build a Boat Out of Materials Found on a Desert Island"

4. One book that made you laugh.
"Love and Other Near-Death Experiences", Mil Millington's third book.  All his books are funny, but this one is more like a cross between a humorous book and "High Fidelity" (the novel).  There are about ten great laugh-out-loud moments.

5. One book that made you cry.
This is going to sound lame and egotistical, but when I wrote the outline for "Coldwater", which I really need to continue writing, I actually cried a little when I killed off a certain character.  Like, feel it welling up, blink hard, sniff it back, et al.

6. One book you wish you had written.
The Greatwinter Series ("Souls in the Great Machine", "The Miocene Arrow", "Eyes of the Calculor") has everything I ever wanted to write in a book series.

7. One book you wish hadn't been written.
Anything by Ann Coulter and/or Michael Savage and/or Sean Hannity

8. One book you are currently reading.
The second book in the "Sector General" series.  It's a reread.  I have a couple of new ones on the shelf up next though, including "Nightwatch".

9. One book you have been meaning to read.
"Snakes on a Plane".  I bought it about a month ago and haven't read it yet.

The audiobook for that is excellent....  Simon Prebble is one of the best narrators around.

Ursus was reading that- he got about halfway through and lost interest.  I may pick it up and see what the scoop is.

JS&MrN?  I read it... the first few hundred pages have promise.  Then, by the end, you're like "okay, we've been doing rising action for 700 pages, where's the climax?"

franny and zooey by j.d. salinger.

2. One book you have read more than once.
a whole lot of them, really. i have about 15 books that i read again about every other year. almost all of the books i keep on my bookshelves are books i've read more than once. the ones i'm the most religious about re-reading are generation x by douglas coupland; dalva by jim harrison; both the salterton and the deptford trilogies by robertson davies; room temperature by nicholson baker; julip by jim harrison; smilla's sense of snow by peter hoeg; the magician's assistant by ann patchett; catcher in the rye by j.d. salinger; and the harry potter books. along with other books, i usually take one of those when i'm going to be traveling very far away from home. it feels good to know that i can pick up a book and know pretty much exactly how it's going to make me feel.

I don't think I've ever really read any books that do any of that stuff to me.  Am I even literate?
11:42:24 [Gamplayerx] I keep getting knocked up.
11:42:28 [Gamplayerx] Er. OUT!

Freaky big ass red dog.  Have you seen that thing??   Have you heard what he's capable of??  Yikes!

dazie

But what about when he was a puppy?  Are you still a hater?

I honestly can't say.  There are plenty I'm glad I didn't write, though.

7. One book you wish hadn't been written.

One genre -- almost every political book written 1999 - present.
So much hot air, so few ideas, so little intellect.

8. One book you are currently reading.

"The Fourth Bear" by Jasper Fforde

9. One book you have been meaning to (re)read.

Two, since one really isn't a book.  George Washington's Farewell
Address, and "Animal Farm" by Orwell.  Both discuss the danger in
blind following of politicians, and their motivations.  Both can be
viewed in modern terms in regards to *all* of our political parties.

I didn't find what I was looking for at the book store.
