I was surfing around on Youtube the other night and I found an interview with David Milch( TV God and creator/writer of Deadwood ) and Craig Furgeson( the poncy guy from The Drew Carey Show ).  In it, they brought up Lawrence Block.  I'd heard his name batted around, but never gave it much notice.  However, after hearing someone of MIlch's character laud the word, I was interested.  As well, Furgeson said something like, "he takes something as simple as a good mystery yarn and turns into existential dilemma." - which admittedly got my interests up.  I bought "A Dance at the Slaughterhouse" on amazon( used ) and it arrived today.  I spent about 6 hours reading the whole thing( I'm not the fastest of readers ) and it blew me out of my seat.  Beautifully constructed and written with a great feel for depth. If you can find his work, check it out.
