Wow.

I was putting my Soul Coughing CDs away this morning and noticed my Soul Asylum CDs sitting there.  Noting that it's been years since I listened to them, I pulled them out.  That's when I noticed that Grave Dancers Union was released in 1992.

Again, wow.

I remember it became in very 'cool' to bash on Soul Asylum after they hit it big, and that Dave Priner became more known for being Winona Ryder's boyfriend than for his band's music.  It's unfortunate.  I'm listening to GDU right now, and Pirner was (is?) a good rock songwriter, and Soul Asylum was (is?) a good rock band that ended up getting lumped in with the rest of the "alternative" music revolution of the early to mid 90s.

14 years...

Beefy

Now listening to Let Your Dim Light Shine.

It warrants mentioning that while a solid rock songwriter, Pirner was(is?) not the greatest lyricist.

I still don't understand why the song "Just Like Anyone" was a combination of teenage angst and going to the bathroom in an outhouse.  It escapes me to this day.

Beefy

Woah, they're still going.  And they have Tommy Stinson with them.

I don't know that I've ever heard anything by Soul Asylum.  I just listened to clips of most of their songs and didn't recognize a single one.  Whoever their singer is, he doesn't have a very pretty voice.

I would be greatly surprised if you made it through the 90s without hearing 'Runaway Train'.  That song was EVERYWHERE.

Yeah, Pirner's voice is earnest but takes some getting used to.

You should email and ask him.

Also, you should start a Happy Birthday thread for him.

That was from "Let Your Dim Light Shine".  I still listen to to Grave Dancers Union.   Again its one of those CDs whose best tracks WEREN'T radio played.  Without A Trace, invoked some nice imagery, though the LA Riots or whatever references on Black Gold, sounds even more outdated than on that Sublime song.
