I still can't believe that they're going to do 6 episodes, then put it on hold for a few months, then finish the season... what's the point?

Well, it might have been if they hadn't amended it with the video at the end of the meeting that announced that the Dharma Initiative was a failure and that they were trying to find a way to reverse engineer the numbers in order to change our destiny.  I guess it could still be.

unless the series is going to end soon, a lot of the mystique regarding what the hell is going on is over.  We know now its a cabal conspiracy type situation as opposed to anything else.  Unless thats what they want us to believe

Supposedly there are two or three seasons left, and each one is supposed to "feel" different.

They've said that season 3 is going to be primarily action.  "Us" vs. "Them"

I'm almost willing to disagree with this.  Remember, the one guy made a point of saying that Ben would never read something like that?  Perhaps they are interested in mental abilities, but not the type that involve schlocky theatrics?

To be sure, but then it doesn't appear as though everyone cares what Ben likes or doesn't.  She may have chosen the book as a direct irritant to Ben, or as an antithesis to what Ben would make them read usually now that he is out of the book club.

Is it worth reading into?  Never can tell with this show.

Either way, Michael Emerson( Ben ) is absolutely fascinating!  I'm really glad they don't have johnny squarejaw as the leader.  Emerson is pure weasel and has that look of intense intelligence.  Great casting job.

thats the sound of Lost and Firefly fans spooging.  Now if the Stephen King book they were reading in the beginning was the
Dark Tower, Lost will really have the mainstream cult-doms set.

They were in Chinese Mandarin, even poor by my standards.  No he talks fast even in their normal conversation.  I was trying to get some friends into FireFly and noticed this.

He does talk to himself... maybe it seemed fast because they swear in Japanese?

They were in Chinese Mandarin, even poor by my standards.  No he talks fast even in their normal conversation.  I was trying to get some friends into FireFly and noticed this.
Hahaha Drew is sayng someone talks fast. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Why do you say she shot him?  I'm under the impression that she pushed him out the window( since he had the pearls in his hand )

Wasn't there a scene where she was looking at the pearls when Jin walked in for dinner?

The pearls were in his hand for some reason.  I guess it could have been one of Sun's father's henchmen, but my thought is she followed Jin in right afterwards.  Perhaps he was giving her the pearls and leaving forever.
Mainly because Sun is showing her sordid past more and more.  And possibly underscoring the scene when the Otherl she shot said "You are not a killer".  WRONG

Does someone go from pleading for his life to suicide in 10 seconds?

It's probably more likely that Sun was actually in the room and had arranged to meet him there.

I really really wanted to see Eko, Jin, Sayid, Locke and Sawyer just team up and kick the shit out of things.   But now we'll just have scowling Jack and those useless lumps Charlie and Hurley mincing around bickering about things.

They killed off the most interesting character on the show.  Jackasses.  Couple that with:
Quote
I'm acting as Gabe's proxy in this strip - essentially, he's "broken up" with Lost. It's complicated by the fact that he holds weekly "Lost Nights," where Lost-themed snacks are sometimes offered, but he's come to conclusion that there's no story actually being told. He no longer believes that events are happening according to some overarching plan. Watching the show now is apparently awful, because where he once perceived a carefully revealed structure he now just sees a couple guys out back beneath a tarp, flashlights held under the chin.

Listening intently to his grievances, it sounded to me like a kind of classic Snipe Hunt scenario, where your dad (or troop leader, or some other bastard) might haul you and your friends into the woods to seek out imaginary birds. A stone might be thrown while you are not looking, and the sound that results is attributed to the Snipe; or, if nothing is heard, this too is construed to be sure evidence of Snipe Activity.

(source penny-arcade.com )

and this show has already jumped the shark.

Now now, I wouldn't go that far as to jumping the shark.  There is no way the mystery of the first season and the initial revelations of the second season could maintain their allure for so long.  If you hang out in a dark scary house long enough, even if you don't know whats going on, it sort of becomes more mundane.   I think its good they are killing off important people, but iw ish they didn't do it so cheesy.

I figured that dude committed suicide by jumping out the window because it was a better fate than what faced him.

Sad that Eko is gone, but not surprising.

1. The actor had gotten in traffic problems on Hawaii.  Look what happened to the last two that happened to.

2. The actor was apparently not happy living in Hawaii anymore.

3. Eko was no longer needed as man of faith on the show now that they've returned John Locke back to his former glory.

I think it's interesting that all the time we complained that we never saw the monster anymore and yet we saw the monster all the time and didn't know it.  Sneaky writers.

Oh, and yeah - the two new Losties suck.  Especially the dude.

Looking forward to find out who the pirate is.  Perhaps it is Radzinsky? (http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Radzinsky)

When Jack saw his dad.  When Hurley saw his imaginary friend.  Whenever anyone saw someone they couldn't possibly be seeing on the island.  It was the "monster" pulling out a memory from someone's head.  At least, that was the inference as I understood it.

The real question is: why?

Because the execs of stated that the reason they are taking such an exasperated gap was to appease fans.  I still think it's a bad idea.  Tt removes the show out of the minds and zeitgeist of the audience right in the middle of the season.  They should have just done like 24 instead of breaking it up.

But my point was more meant to be about not being able to please the fans.  The show already gets bitched about constantly because they "never" reveal anything, though they have stayed true to their mandate of how they stated the show would unfold from the beginning.  So then they try to appease fans and break up the season into two portions and people bitch about the long wait in the middle.  And I'm sure there will be some new reasons to bitch before the season is through.

I count myself among the bitchy.  I just don't know that the bitchiness is helping solve anything.  I'm not convinced this bi-season thing isn't a worse idea.  If the ratings start to fall too much the writers and producers may be forced to wrap everything up in an abrupt period of time and that wouldn't sit very well.

True, it's out of sight out of mind, but really, it's no worse than what they did during season 2.  They had breaks for no goddamned reason.  They just disappeared and nobody knew when they'd be seeing another Lost.  If they're smart they'll have something between the sub-seasons.  Like BSG did with the Resistance web-episodes.

I'm pretty much through with the show.  They're not revealing some grand story - they're throwing spaghetti and seeing what sticks.

Maybe the quality hasn't really changed, but I found it a much higher quality and engrossing showing watching n controlled bursts on DVD from season 1 to early season 2.  From late Season 2 on I've been watching with commercials and long breaks.  I forget what happens and why I care.

I have to agree with Bish in a way.  There'd better be some overarching theme or other earlier loose ends tied evenly, or this is rapidly turning into a high budget nerdy soap opera.  It still is the top 5 things on TV though.

True or not the general connotation of soap operas being cheap thrills, absurd plot mechanics, melodrama...

Anyway, i just finished the last episode on the website (I have to say, shows on network websites is a great idea).

By the time the next new episode rolls around, the sense of curiousity and burning from the last episode has already naturally put itself out.

5 cent analogy: Only foreplay at night, then the suddenly SURPRISE SEX, two days later in the afternoon. That is how the plot unveils.

Gamp, you haven't seen Lost right?  Don't get me wrong its a great show.  Just wait till the series is over and watch the DVDs, 3 or 4 episodes per week.  Its the most natural and satisfying way to do it.

Hey Bish, did you see that they've hired Brian K. Vaughn onto the writing staff?  So now they have Vaughn and Loeb.  I wonder how that will change the course of things, if at all.

I heard about this last weekend.  Vaughn is a fantastic writer and will hopefully class the show up 100%.  Unfortunately, Lost is in Season 3 now.  They've dug a seriously deep fucking hole for themselves.  In the famous words of Deadwood, "Trixie must have done some magic fucking for Al to keep her alive!"  Vaughn's going to have to do some magical fucking to fix this show.  I'd rather see Vaughn and Loeb on Heroes.

Apparently Abram's much ballyhooed return to the show wasn't much, as he's working on a pilot for HBO and steering the Star Trek franchise now.

Abrams can't do long-term gigs.  Alias turned into a fucking mess in season 3.  He seems to run out of ideas very quickly.

Mittelos is an anagram for "lost time", Aldo was reading A Brief History of Time last night, specificaly the chapter on black holes and how they can bend time and space, and Mr. Friendly/Zeke/Tom mentioned to Jack last night that ever since the hatch blew and the sky turned purple that getting Ben off the island is no longer a possibility.

Think that the island is outside the normal Earth timestream now?  Seems that way...

This also explains last night's conundrum of why a 27 year old woman's uterus looked like a 70 year old woman's uterus.  If this woman had been in a timestream that moved much faster than the normal, she would have aged faster.  Or something like that.  This narrative device could also be employed when they finally bring Walt back on the show, since he will be much older in real life and they will have to address that.

Well, they played the Mama and Papas tune that we first heard the first time we entered the hatch and discovered Desmond.  That one played twice last night.

The other song?  Sarah McLachlan, "Building a Mystery"  I LOL'd.

I just finished watching it.  I'm really surprised.  I didn't check but it really feels like a Brian K Vaughn storyline.  However, the first Eko episode was fan fucking tastic as well and look where it got him?  They start strong and then they just throw it away.  I'll be shocked if the Desmond storyline resolves with any coherence - or better yet, knowing the main writers, at all.

I read an article last night that said LOST had its worst ratings yet.

The show has gone downhill for me.  It's just horrible.  They're all over the place, no clear goal, and it's just confusing and boring.

They need to recapture Season 1 magic somehow.  They left way too many unanswered questions from Seasons 1 & 2, and I get the impression they forgot about it.

When will the giant foot statue thing be addressed?  Ever?

Mikhail: We still have another way [out].

Klugh: We cannot risk it. You know the conditions.

Mikhail: There is another way.

Klugh: They captured us. We will not let them to get into the territory.

Klugh: You know what to do. That's an order.

Mikhail: We still have another way!

Klugh (in English): Just do it, Mikhail.

Mikhail: Forgive me. (shoots)

The first underlined text is a declension form of a name Andrey, which is also mentioned nearby with red ink, saying "My name is also Andrey". Andrey has no feminine version, it is a widely used masculine name.

The red text on the second sheet says "I've forgotten so much about Afganistan".

The text itself seems to be a kind of narrative about events before/during the conflict in Afganistan ("The fall of Afganistan may be a nudge to a worldwide socialist revolution."). Andrey appears to be a key figure in the text.

I'll try to translate as much as possible from it:

...were lost in his counry, and they have to be...
...with force, and if neccessary, through complete social...
...in some extent repulsed Andrey. Nadzhi was not...
...of afgan resistance, however, he was an excellent...
...he was a half-cousin (second cousin) of an influential...
...who controlled one of north-eastern...
...(some kind of - only the end of the word is present) specialist, who helped...
...Mudzhahedins used...

...he compensated with his brains...
...as all of the radicals of the time, Nadzhi...
...believed that they restrain the West and...
...they make way to Allah, so that he erased from the face of the Earth all non-believers,
while Andrey believed that the fall of Afganistan may be a nudge to a worldwide socialist revolution.
The Pakistanis arrived today, - announced Nadzhi with a strong accent
in stilted Russian.
We knew that ISI would be involved in this. And you...
...report this? Andrey knew that he...
...as well. I reckoned that you...

If anyone has better images of the missing fragments, post them to homo.sapiens.alexis(at)gmail.com and I'll try to make something out of them.

From a TF discussion thread:

QuoteIn Sawyer's first flashback we learned he grew up in Knoxville, TN. In his second flashback we learned that the original Sawyer was from Tallahassee and it was one of the few things our Sawyer had learned about him. I'm sure Locke's dad is the original Sawyer, and the two will have a reckoning at some point.

3.17 Desmond Hume
3.18 Jin & Sun Kwon
3.19 Jack Shephard
3.20 Karen & Gerald DeGroot

I never got around to watching it last night, either, damn it.

Tonight I'm taking Timothy to the 6:30 showing of Spiderman, and then I will watch Lost.

At some point I need to watch Frankenhooker too and send it back to Netflix.

Pseudo-spoilers on what to expect from the last two episodes of the season.  The biggest one, IMO, is next to last.

* We do not get a lot more information this season about Richard Alpert and the island's other natives.

* We do not get a lot more information this season on the Dharma Initiative or the Hanso Foundation.

* We do not learn a lot more this season about Jacob.

* We don't learn more about the four-toed statue.

* Christian Shepherd is not discovered alive.

* Libby does not appear.

* We will learn something huge about Kate.

* We get a major clue related to the "other" Oceanic 815 that boasted no survivors.

* We'll be meeting new characters, not all of them in flashbacks.

* Rousseau's original Frenchy broadcast from the pilot plays a role this week.

* There is much death in the finale.

* Yet another original cast member goes the way of Boone and Shannon.

* A long-absent regular returns. And that regular is not listed among ABC's cast list.

* We will see Terry O'Quinn at least one more time before the season ends.

* We see a new side of Hurley.

* Desmond does not sacrifice himself to save Charlie.

* There's a big reveal involving Naomi and Penelope.

* The huge huge huge HUGE season-ending reveal resides in Jack's very dark flashbacks, so watch them very carefully.

* Between now and 2008, fans may scratch holes in their heads wondering how this show is going to continue next season.

I believe I've explained this before.  I call it the X-Files Effect.  It's when you get enthralled in a show that is very deliberately and methodically revealing it's mythology/mysteries to you, and you get more and more hooked and spend years of your life watching it, just to have the whole thing implode into a pathetic lump of crap that is so insulting that you wish you hadn't wasted all of those years watching in the first place.  So now I have this almost compulsion to find this crap out ahead of time to find out whether the writers and producers are going to screw over their audience (me) in a big way.

The thing is, I don't mind knowing who lives and dies, or when, or how.  None of that bothers me or really interferes with my enjoyment of the show.  But I will admit I wish I hadn't kept reading to find out about the big reveal.  Next week, many many people are all going to have this enormously gratifying OH SHIT moment that I will miss out on because I know what's coming.  And yes, for that I admit I am a moron.  I wish I could unsee that part.

Interestingly, I have no need to spoil Heroes for myself.  I think that's because I was such an avid comic reader growing up and the whole show feels like comfort food to me.  It's not doing anything particularly original, but it's doing it well and that's enough to keep me watching for now.

"Who's death could have shaken Jack so profoundly? Some speculate the name on the obit is Jeremy Bentham.

Jeremy Bentham was an English jurist, philosopher, and legal and social reformer. He was a political radical and a leading theorist in Anglo-American philosophy of law. He is best known as an early advocate of utilitarianism and animal rights who influenced the development of liberalism.

He invented the Panopticon. The Panopticon is a type of prison building designed by English philosopher Jeremy Bentham in the late eighteenth century. The concept of the design is to allow an observer to observe all prisoners without the prisoners being able to tell if they are being observed or not, thus conveying a "sentiment of an invisible omniscience." In his own words, Bentham described the Panopticon as "a new mode of obtaining power of mind over mind, in a quantity hitherto without example."

He also lead the Jacobin Terrorist (Jacob reference?). The Jacobin Club was the largest and most powerful political club of the French Revolution. It originated as the Club Breton, formed at Versailles as a group of Breton deputies to the Estates General of 1789. At the height of its influence, there were between five and eight thousand chapters throughout France, with a membership estimated at 500,000. After the fall of Robespierre the club was closed."

I was just reading an editorial (http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=thud&id=10411) on why Lost is brilliant and Heroes is terrible.  I will agree with the majority sentiment that the finale of Heroes was merely okay and somewhat disappointing and that Lost came out of nowhere and delivered a season ender that was just sensational.  But to riff on a point that Bish made, as great as Lost has been at its highs, you still have Nikki and Paolo, or the "can you train an army" bullshit, or a myriad of other reasonable criticisms.  I really hope that Heroes learns from the mistakes it made, learns how to tell a compelling climax, and learns to stop just dropping in convenient characters that just serve to further the plot for an episode or two before disappearing completely, but I also hope that Lost, now with a concrete number of episodes left, stops dicking around with pointless characters and non-drama and actually allows characters to speak like normal people would in a state of duress.

Valid point #1: Why, in Heroes, when the shape changing chick got knocked out cold did she not revert to her true, fat and ugly body instead of the model/actress visage she kept to make herself feel better?

Valid point #2: How much shorter would the Lost season finale have been if Locke or Ben would have just told people what the hell was going on with the island instead of being pointlessly mysterious and obtuse?  Normal people would have just said, look, THIS is why you shouldn't being doing this.  I realize that kills the mystery of the show and all, but the motivations aren't realistic when they act so detrimental to their own cause.

I think both shows have room for improvement, but are entertaining nonetheless.

It was a dark and stormy night. A shot rang out. The maid screamed.

Well it was a dark and stormy night. My mom and aunt were on the last leg (Dallas to Little Rock) of an international trip (I think they were coming back from France) flying in an MD-82. There were severe thunderstorms at Little Rock but the tower told the American Airlines 1420 that they could make it through a hole in the storm if they came straight in. The pilots came through the storm and touched down on the runway. Unfortunately, they had, in their haste, forgotten to arm the wing spoilers. The spoilers are those little panels that pop up on the wing when the plane registers enough weight on the landing gear. It basically stops the wings from being lift devices and lets the entire weight of the plane onto the wheels. Without arming these devices, the plane was still being partially supported by the wings when they tried to slow down.

The plane skidded down the runway, off to the right, and then off to the left, before it went off the end of the runway. The end of the runway happened to be a 40ft drop off. The runway lighting systems were mounted on the equivalent of high tension power cable towers several hundred feet past the 40 ft drop off. The plane slammed through two sets of these (one of them piercing the fuselage and killing the pilot) before coming to rest in the shape depicted in the photo. Broken into many pieces and on fire.

My mom was in one part of the plane and was able to escape without much difficulty. My aunt was the part of the plane that was on fire. There was only a small hole in the roof that everyone was trying to get to and some very overweight person was blocking it. The people behind the overweight lady forced her through (causing some damage to her skin and body) and most of them were able to get out. My aunt, who is an artist and very visually minded, saw some pretty gruesome things. Ten of the passengers, one crew member and the pilot died of the 139 aboard.

Once they were on the ground it was a comedy of errors. They walked into a field that was being hit by a thunderstorm with the force of small tornado. The field was adjacent to the Arkansas river and everyone was afraid that walking away from the plane would plunge them into the river. The emergency vehicles didn't know which runway they were on, and when they did find out, they went to the wrong end before figuring out that the burning plane was at the other end.

My aunt had broken ribs from tumbling off the top of the plane. Both my aunt and mom had some pretty major post traumatic stress syndrome issues for years. Other than that, they both walked away with no permanent scars.

I, as a family member, got to tour the crash site before they hauled the plane away. It was... words fail. Horrible. Awesome in its implications of people walking away from it physically uninjured. Sublime.

I took some pictures with my cousin's 35mm including a multi-shot panorama that my aunt stitched together and blew up to wall size mural.

They both got large cash settlements from the airline but no golden tickets.

My mom and aunt don't watch Lost.

For more details and pics check out these links:

Chase plane simulation (you have to download the 4mb file and then play it from your hard drive): http://www.ntsb.gov/Events/2000/aa1420/anim_boardmtng.htm

The site that has the best photos but hates dirty hot linkers: http://www.airdisaster.com/photos/aa1420/photo.shtml

There is more stuff out there including first hand second-by-second recounts of the event if you search for American 1420.

I consider myself inoculated from plane crashes. I mean, what are the odds of two people, directly related, both being in a plane crash?

I didn't see the shortness of the coffin.  And the name, could be a throw off.  The clipping says he was survived by a teenage son.  As well, the showing was in a predominately black neighborhood.

Granted, now that I think of it, Harrold Pernneu declined coming back so it probably wouldn't be a pay off not showing him. Hm.

Hm.

Didn't know he declined.  But then, didn't Boone initially decline and trash talk the show, just to come back and film more cameos anyways?

I hated the para-Lost experience.  It felt very cheap and empty, much like hanging out at an airport gift shop at the end of your vacation thinking about the upcoming week.  NOW THATS EMO

I stand by my hilarious statement.  Other than a picture what did the puzzle tell us?

I have a new theory

the last episode wasn't a flash forward.  It was a flash back.  What we saw in S1-S3 was actually the second time they were on the island before a memory wipe of sorts.

I don't think it's ever coming back.  Do you think that they'll lose a lot of viewers just because it's been so damn long?
