Maybe Nathan let him go before he asploded, and then flew around and collected all the Peter bits, and then flew the Peter bits back to earth, and the the Peter bits coalesced like mercury drops and then Nathan died of mercury poisoning.

Wait, Peter could fly on his own anyway because he absorbs the powers of others, including Nathan's.  So why did Nathan, or anyone else, need to assist him in the first place?  Just fly up or to somewhere remote and wait it out.

Maybe the radiation was taking up all his energy and focus, so he couldn't think to do any other powers.

I think he lost control of all his powers, which is why he blew up. At that moment he was absorbing all of sylar's powers, plus the powers of Nikki, DL, Michi, and Molly. I think it overloaded him and he couldn't fly away on his own.

I'm pretty sure Nathan didn't live.  Like Beefy said, even if he had let him go, the radiation would be too much for his body at that point.

No formal public announcements have been made that I know of, but apparently J.J. Abrams is directing the next Star Trek film, in which he's going back to show the earlier adventures of a young Kirk and Spock.
