I managed to get the wireless internet working on one laptop - but it's the crappy laptop that has no cd or floppy drives and the screen is pink (I'm actually using it right now) and it only has a teeny crappy little speaker.   But I still can't get it working on the other laptop.  Why??  It keeps telling me that it's connected to the network but can't find the internet.

Linksys was no help.  Any of you have any ideas?

opus

Could be a bunch of things.

Are you running through a router or just a wireless access hub?  Also, do you have more than one machine on at a time.  Some ISP's limit you to one machine (yes they can tell, but don't always do anything about it) at a time.

Feel free to email me if you want, maybe we can get to the bottom of it.
Remeber, no matter where you go, there you are.

ignom

Call Comcast or whoever your internet provider is. Or else call DownSouth.
Underneath this flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character.

meredith

What error messages do you see?  If you're using encryption on the wireless network, did you remember to give that laptop the encryption key?

go to start, then run, type "command" and press enter

type "ping hattmoward.org" then enter

It should come up with something like below.  Let me know if it says anything different.

Quote
Pinging hattmoward.org [69.55.234.84] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 69.55.234.84: bytes=32 time=75ms TTL=43

Reply from 69.55.234.84: bytes=32 time=69ms TTL=43
Reply from 69.55.234.84: bytes=32 time=72ms TTL=43

Ping statistics for 69.55.234.84:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

It's a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router.  I haven't tried again with the other laptop, but this one wasn't on when I was trying to set it up on the other laptop.

hatt, I'm not getting an error message, it just says "Connected to network, unable to find Internet."  Lemme turn it on and I'll try the pinging.

Thanks, ignom and ReBurn!

Comcast has no clue.  They have no problem with me hooking up a gazillion computers.

Gamplayerx

Here's the only other variable I can think of - the desktop and this laptop are Windows XP.  The laptop that can't find the internet is Windows 2000.

meredith

ah windows 2000.  another thing to run in that command window is "ipconfig".  take note of any lines reading "IP Address" for me.

btw, are any other houses close enough for wireless to reach your computers?  is it possible it's picked up on someone else's network?

Gamplayerx

The ping thing was unsuccessful. "Unknown host hattmoward.org."

ipconfig:  IP address is 169.l254.186.82

Beefy

I pinged hatt just fine.  Now I need a smoke.

Gamplayerx

Oh. And my neighbor's have a wireless network which I can see, but I'm not trying to connect to them.

BigDun

Do the same IPConfig thing on the working laptop and tell us what it's IP address is.

opus

That address is a standard one automatically assigned by windows at startup when there is no discernable netwrok conenction.

Your machine is not getting an IP address from the router.  This could be a good first clue.
Remeber, no matter where you go, there you are.

That address is one that is used when a PC is expecting the network to tell it what address to use, but doesn't get a response.  Did you say whether or not you checked that it's going for the right ESSID and has the right encryption key (if applicable)?

meredith

Linksys defaults to 192.168.1.0, no?

192.168.1.100 is the first assigned DHCP IP address for her router.

If you know the subnet it uses and the range it assigns, then why did you ask?

I want to verify that her working laptop has DHCP assignment from her router and not her neighbors.

Cover it in magnets.  That'll do the trick.

Gamplayerx

ipconfig on this computer says 192.168.1.101.

I don't know what that first part means, but on the second part, yes - it has the right encryption key.

The desktop connected directly to the router probably got the 192.168.1.100 address.

I never use encryption. I lock access down by the ethernet adapter's unique identifying number. If someone wants to sniff my packets from the street, they are free to do so.

the ESSID is the wireless network name.  Linksys defaults surprising to "Linksys" :)  but I think they have you pick your own during setup
