There are two distinct ways this movie can go. Fun( ala The Rock ) or total ass chewing terrible( ala Pearl Harbor ). Micheal Bay only has two modes.

I'm not a huge fan of Bay, but I have trouble thinking of a better director for this project. The film needs to be flashy, loud, and exciting, with little to no depth.

You are absolutely correct.
1. Peter Cullen must do Optimus Prime.
2. Optimus Prime must be based on the original cartoon version.
3. If Jazz is in the film, they must splice together old Scatman Crothers sound bites.
In the sequels, forgo the Dinobots. Give us Metroplex vs. Devastator.
I would go see this. I would have to take my dad, though.

what happened to it
It was VHS and I got rid of most of my VHS movies.
Actually, it may have been DVD. I remember I bought it from some Canadian company over the internet.
There are 2 versions available:
Original widescreen with no cuss words
Fullscreen with the cuss words
The latter of the two is available on DVD.
The version of the DVD I have has the cuss words in it.

As said by Devin at chud (http://www.chud.com):
QuoteThere's something about the Transformers animated movie that never ceases to touch the emotionally stunted and socially retarded among us. I see people talking about this cartoon as if knocking off a couple of robots was edgy (and by the way, I refuse to be in a room alone with anyone who, as an adult, gets emotional over the death of Optimus Prime. Ugh), and using the fact that Orson Welles was in it as proof of some level of quality. It's actually sad that Welles' last role was in this film, which was even worse than that one GI Joe miniseries where Cobra Commander became an actual snake.
It made me snicker.
Devin at CHUD can bite me, ok?

Anyway, someone got a pic of what Optimus looks like in vehicle form. One could say that it may or may not be true, but since aintitcool was asked to take it down I think we can assume it is likely true. And if you go and see the reaction here (http://www.aintitcool.com/tb_display.cgi?id=23825#1215691), you can tell the fans are not happy (as well as racist, in a few cases). Not surprising. Though it may just be a toy franchise to most people, Optimus was iconic to a whole generation of kids, and messing with his look is pretty stupid since that is the audience you need to come fill seats on opening day.
Aintitcool was told to take down the pic. But this is the Internet, and nerds have their ways.

Holy crap! Thanks for reminding me!
The newly enhanced transfer is gorgeous. Some of the extras are okay, but aren't overtly revealing. There's next to nothing on the new movie, though there is a little bit of live action footage (minus the bots) that shows you the scope of how big these things will be. They also speak of car chase in the film where a car going 80mph will transform into robot form in midchase and keep running at that speed. That right there is enough to get my money (like I wouldn't have gone anyways). Spielberg even shows up, though his involvement brings nothing to the sneak peek.

Fark's changed!
I was thinking abuot the old transformers cartoon? has it aged well? Memory would say 'no'.
I'm still sort of traumatized by the horrible screaming and graphic deaths during the first cartoon movie. I honestly think of it as a culturally definitive moment for a generation otherwise insulated from suffering (yet living in a Cold War milieu).
Well, the stories don't maintain the interest like they did for us as children, but all things considered they held up better than some others 80s staples. They seem less ridiculous to me now than the G.I. Joe cartoons, for whatever reason.

From what I can remember and from what wikipedia tells me, post-movie Transformers cartoons had a bit omore of an edge and less stilted characters. The Autobots always lacked personality, but Machevellian Starscream? "Brooklyn" Rumble? Swindle? Soundwave? Ass kisser shockwave?
And this little gem I found! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_End_%28Transformers%29#Transformers:_Generation_1_.281986.29 I vaguely remember the British accent Decepticons. He's so emo!

All in all I don't care that much.
I would have preferred to see the G1 and G2 cartoon only made with mid 2000s style story arcs and fascinating character interactions. The Transformers as a whole actually form a pastiche of various neuroses, doubts fears and ids of a genreation. or it could been. It was an ensemble drama in its finest. Or it could have been.
Basically, I want a grown up version of the cartoon with the same characters.

The funny thing is, they could leave that box empty and no one would ever notice. No one is going to let their kid play with an $80 transformer, and no one who buys it for himself is going to devalue it by opening it, since he knows he's too old to actually play with it.

At first, I thought that was stupid. Then I realized that if you have seven people watch it at your house, it's cheaper than going out to see the movie. And you can totally have a circlejerk if you wanted.
I'm gonna see it in the theater with my boys.

Exactly, and if you have a great system to watch it, it's better than dealing with shmoes at the theater. Plus you can eat and drink what you want when you want.
Plus, you know, the circle jerk.
I can see this speeding up the bootleg process with better quality DVD's hitting the market and net quickly. It might be good on the front end but I can see some bad sides on the back end.
I would pay $50 to be able to watch it at home, especially if it were in HD. I paid that much just to buy the tickets to Spider Man 3, and I had to sit in a crowded theater to watch it.
Makes a lot of sense for a family with kids and a good entertainment system.
I just checked and they're starting screenings Monday night at 8pm.
It's here. :) Still in the can, delivered as "Cobra" not Transformers.

If you happen to see one of the prints of Transformers that has the "secret" teaser in front of it, please don't come back and ruin it for anyone. It is supposedly quite fun and conversation inducing, but less so if you know it's coming. We may want to discuss it here, of course, but let's do it in small print so we don't ruin anyone's fun.

Released early. The official release isn't until Tuesday. Lucky you!
It starts at 8pm tonight nationwide.
The teaser is "secret" in that the whole project has been kept under wraps and the teaser itself doesn't even have the name of the film on it. I'm not sure there is a name for the film yet. I know what the shooting title is, but I doubt they stick with it. At any rate, those folks who have seen it are apparently all abuzz about it.

They're referring to it as "The Parasite". But the cool thing is the whole film is supposed to be seen through the cameras of typical New Yorkers, who all record the events as they occur. Not unlike all the people who busted out their cameras during 9/11. I'm pretty sure that's never been done before. And it could suck, but it also might be awesome.

Yeah, but not sticking with the same one camera the whole time. I'm guessing they'd have to at least choose 4 or 5 main groups of people in various parts of the city to follow around.
I will say one thing - if you're one of those people that can't let their inner child come through, don't even bother going to see this movie. You have to be willing to turn back into your 10 year old self, playing with your Transformers. This is no classical masterpiece. But I can say that I have *never* in my life cheered for the good guys so hard.
I went to all first showings of the last 3 Star Wars movies, the cheering and applause was more than all 3 of those combined during The Transformers. Anytime Optimus Prime came on screen, the audience went nuts. Granted, 95% of the audience was around my age. And this movie was way funnier than I expected. Not to mention, Shia LeBeouf (sp?) did a phenomenal job. They did the casting for that role perfectly. I can't imagine them having found anyone better to play Sam.

Have you played the new one?
I had the one they made for the PS2 a few years back. It was merely okay. They never gave you a real reason to transform, so even though you had the ability it was useless to do so.
The new one looks good, but is pretty shallow. It is more fun to play as the decepticons because you have license to blow stuff up. When you play as the autobots you get penalized for damage you do, but everything breaks so easily. It is the average, mediocre movie video game.

No, I haven't seen any trailers for Underdog. Though I haven't really been to many movies lately with those kinds of trailers.
Around here it ran ahead of Pirates and Fantastic Four. You know what other trailer ran in front of both of those movies? Hot Rod. That movie's going to be so stupid! I can't wait to see it.

As of today it's already made back it's production budget.
It cost less than half of POTC 3, but was twice as fun and exciting. And was a HUGE leap forward in special effects (save for a shot or two), like watching Jurassic Park the first time and realizing you're seeing something totally new.

I bought a Transformers shirt and posted about it in my 365 series.
You don't look that happy about it.
i saw it. it was good.
· Biggest first-week gross ever for a non-sequel (beating Spider-Man's $151.6 mil)
· A global box office total of $246.1 mil, when you add in the $93.6 mil Transformers earned in 23 other countries
· Biggest Tuesday gross ever ($27.9 mil), as well as the third-best Wednesday ($29.1 mil) and fifth-best Thursday ($19.2 mil)
· A super-solid $16,854 per-theater average in 4,011 venues
· A resounding CinemaScore rave of A from an audience that was two-thirds male but evenly split between young folk and old
And still no sequel announcement.
I don't think it should get to count as a non-sequel because there was already a Transformers movie.

Gee, you think?
It just got another $6 from me.
Lot's of style, so littlle substance. And yes, massive lapses in logic, even it's own stilted logic.
I saw it.
It was loud.
And shiny.
More later.
OK- 2nd movie in the mini-movie-marathon today.
I dragged my "I'm not in to Transformers" son to see it after we'd seen Evan Almighty. Free movies, why not? Lots of eye rolling and threatening to walk home.
I whooped and clapped twice during the film, including the "one shall rise, and one shall fall" part. Sadly, I was the only one that did. I guess all the geeks already saw it. Totally embarassed my son.
As the action progressed, Tim sat forward in his seat and started DEVOURING the popcorn. Then, at the end, he turned to me and said "That was really cool!" I said we'd probably buy it when it comes out on DVD and he said "Are you kidding? We're GOING to buy it!"
Heh. Assimilation is nearly complete. His geek-ness grows stronger. :saber:

I wouldn't have taken you for a fan[girl] of the animated Transformers movie. You learn something new everyday. :)
There's more to me than meets the eye... ;)
If you're really a fan of the animated Transformers then the extra content in the anniversary edition of Transformers the Movie makes it a solid buy in my opinion. Even if you already had the original release. You should check that out if you haven't.

If I had the money I probably would have bought that.
I might go see this again tonight.
I did. Took Ursus this time.
He was less than impressed overall, but did like the effects.

That is so cool.
My birthday is in two weeks. Can someone order me a Bumblebee cake please?
My birthday is in 2 weeks. Anyone want to go see it with me? Extra large popcorn with special butter included.

I'll go as long as I get to hold the popcorn bucket.
It amazes me how long this thread went on.
The movie's out on DVD today. Of course I'm buying it, but I fear it won't hold up as well on TV where the spectacle is somewhat diminished.
Sweet. I'm so getting this too - though is there any news about any special additions?
Quote from: Beefy on July 15, 2005, 10:51:34 AM
And get the effing G.I.Joe property moving again.
This is apparently on the list of films to rush to get done before the Hollywood strikes occur in the summer. Rushed Hollywood movies usually = teh suck.
They better find a role in it for Ice Cube.

I've haven't really looked into it. I hope they include as Easter Eggs those videos they had on the Website of the Dinobots and Insecticons and such.
Awesome. I had mentioned I was going to buy it today when it came out. I brought Sara coffee during recess and she had bought the two disk collectors edition set for me. I'll be watching it tonight.
You get recess at your job? Do you play kickball?
I really wanted to get this but my dad went to CA this morning so I'll have to wait till next week. BOO
I was just here yeterday. http://www.millenniummusic.com/ Double BOO. One day early.

I'm off today, getting stuff ready to move. I went during her recess.
I don't think she plays kickball, but she does have a nice playground.

Does it have a well-manicured lawn? Or Gravel? Wood Chips? Non-injuring rubber?

There is non-injuring rubber around the slides and stuff, and wood chips on the ground.

Planet Terror's out today, too.
I passed on the two-disc set for now.

no no no. she went with alison to confessions of a shopaholic. i went with a buddy to f13. there were a ton of kids kayla's age there. it was crazy. 10 year olds watching tits and ass, and people getting stabbed in the head.

i'm not surprised. though F13 may be less harmful to them than CoaS.

haha. probably. i see what you're saying from a vapid, shallow standpoint.
as a male, though, wouldn't it be worth it to see almost two hours of isla fisher?
I read an interview with her where she said, "If this movie goes well, it's all me. But if it doesn't? It was all Amy Adams."
I thought that was pretty funny.

it was a poor excuse for a joke. i know next to nothing about CoaS. it's name doesn't inspire much confidence, but it could still be good entertainment for girls. gotta be better than bratz the movie, at any rate.
isla waited too long after wedding crashers to try and cash in on her fame.
