Title: Grendel
Post by: Miss Molly on July 05, 2006, 11:10:32 PM
Has anyone else ever read this?  It's by John Gardner.

I'm on my second or third read with it in many, many years.  I may have read it in high school.  Which is pretty weird, considering it's a violent and very adult book.

You have to have Beowulf fresh in your mind though to get some of it.  Several parts are laugh-out-loud funny (to me), in a one-liner sense.

I've never been one to really understand the "deeper meaning" of literature.  I wouldn't mind some other people's perspective on it though.

If you haven't read it, read the cliffs notes (or preferred version) on Beowulf, and then pick it up.  It's a quick, easy read; less than 200 pages.

I've often thought that Gregory Maguire got his concept for "Wicked" and "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" from Grendel.

I just finished reading "confessions" a few weeks ago.  Ok book, not as fun as Wicked though.

Coicidentally, I put in a request for Wicked at the library today.  Again.  The last time, my request expired before the book became available.
