Title: Can someone please explain bandwidth?
Post by: Youphoric on April 20, 2005, 01:53:36 PM
I just got a lovely notice in my gamil saying that my bandwidth is at 80% and is about to be exceeded.

How does one measure bandwidth?  ???

No, this happened after I made that "Apache" page on my site...

Bite me, DS :)

Bandwidth is measure of how much data has transfered. If I am watching a video feed that is 300K then I am using 300 Kilobytes of bandwidth per second. If that video plays for 100 seconds then I have used 30,000 Kilobytes or 30 Megabytes of bandwidth total.

Either remove the page entirely, or block it from public view.  That will save some if you're getting close.  Better having one of two pages unavailable than the whole site.

Hmm...I'm looking into things and it looks like it wasn't just today, I need to look into what caused it....

I know part of it is my guild's forum, but aside from my PM's it's not very active, and there's hardly anything on my site...

Yes, when I was saying 300K I was meaning that the bitrate was 300K. If you have a 500 KB file that gets downloaded 100 times then you have used 500 K * 100 = 50,000K or 50 Megabytes of bandwidth.

And that doesn't even count the Kilobytes that get wasted when there's someone like Eo around.

Each character is one byte. Every time you quote a previous statement, the quoted characters get added into the cumulative bandwidth required to download the entire thread. Why this quoted comment alone must be using at least .001 Megabyte.

Bandwidth is measure of how much data has transfered. If I am watching a video feed that is 300K then I am using 300 Kilobytes of bandwidth per second. If that video plays for 100 seconds then I have used 30,000 Kilobytes or 30 Megabytes of bandwidth total.

If it's streaming content.... A 300K file will only transfer 300K.

First of all, you need to stop the excessive quoting.

I know. Waste, waste, waste.
Iagree, the excessive quoting has got to stop.
Quoting wastes bandwidth?
I don't get it.
Each character is one byte. Every time you quote a previous statement, the quoted characters get added into the cumulative bandwidth required to download the entire thread. Why this quoted comment alone must be using at least .001 Megabyte.
How much now?
15,134 Bytes.
How much NOW?

11 more.  Unless spaces count.
